Echt-Susteren
Echt-Susteren (; ) is a Municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality in the southeastern Netherlands. Echt-Susteren was created in 2003 by merging the former municipalities of Echt, Netherlands, Echt and Susteren. Echt-Susteren is situated in a Euregional area. In the west the municipality borders to Belgium and in the east to Germany. The narrowest is only 4.8 km wide. It is possible to walk from Germany to Belgium via Netherlands in under an hour. The area of Echt-Susteren is a green municipality also known as the green waist of Limburg. Echt, Netherlands
Echt (; ) is a city in the Dutch municipality of Echt-Susteren in the province of Limburg, Netherlands. It was a municipality itself until it merged with the municipality of Susteren on 1 January 2003. The municipality of Echt had about 19,300 inhabitants and an area of about 75,13 square km. History First recorded in the 7th century, Echt was a village, then within the County of Loon. Between 928 and 939 Gerberga of Saxony gave the estate of "Ettha" and its church to the St Servatius community in Maastricht. In 1075/1076 Gerard I of Guelders, received the estate of Echt on loan from Albert III, Count of Namur and deputy duke of Lower Lorraine. However, a charter from Emperor Henry IV from 1087 gives a different picture of this donation: according to the Godschalk van Aken, Gerard I of Guelders is said to have illegally taken possession of the church of Echt ("Echta") ("invaserat"), while this belonged to the St. Servatius Chapter. Nieuwstadt
Nieuwstadt () () is a city in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Limburg (Netherlands), Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Echt-Susteren, and lies about 5 km north of Sittard. Nieuwstadt received city rights in 1277. History It was first mentioned in 1242 as "Novo Opido", and means "new (fortified) city", and received city rights in 1277. Nieuwstadt was a border city of the Duchy of Guelders and received city walls. In 1383, it was severe damaged and a more compact settlement developed. In 1573, the walls were demolished and Nieuwstadt started to stagnate. The Catholic St John the Baptist Church has a nave from the 13th century. The choir was added in the 14th century is slight crooked. The church was restored in 1862 by Pierre Cuypers. The church was damaged during World War II and was repaired in 1946. Susteren
Susteren (; ) is a city in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Echt-Susteren, about 7 km northwest of Sittard. It was a separate municipality until 2003, when it was merged with Echt. Susteren received city right in 1276. Susteren harboured the Benedictine Abbey Susteren, that was founded in the 8th century and was closed at the end of the 18th century. Its Romanesque church was raised to the status of a basilica in 2007 by pope Benedict XVI. There is a museum ‘t Stift next to the church. Other sights are the Cannon on the market, castle Eyckholt, the mill Dieterdermolen and typical River Meuse valley farms like the Hommelhof. Koningsbosch (, ) is a village within the municipality of Echt-Susteren, in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Limburg (Netherlands), Limburg. Koningsbosch is located next to the Germany, German border, approximately 10 kilometres east of the town of Echt. Limburg (; ), also known as Dutch Limburg, is the southernmost of the twelve provinces of the Netherlands. It is bordered by Gelderland to the north and by North Brabant to the west.
