Ebden is a closed railway station, located in the town of Ebden, on the Cudgewa line in Victoria, Australia. Charles Hotson Ebden (1811 – 28 October 1867) was an Australian pastoralist and politician, a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council, the Victorian Legislative Council and the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Early life Ebden was born in 1811 at the Cape of Good Hope in the Cape Colony, the son of merchant, banker and politician John Bardwell Ebden and his wife Antoinetta. He was educated in England and also in Karlsruhe in the German Confederation. Early career in Australia As a young man Ebden made several trips between the Cape and the Australian colonies, before settling in Sydney, New South Wales in 1832 and establishing a merchant business. After accumulating sufficient capital, he moved into pastoralism, and by early 1835 was among those pastoralists introducing cattle to the southern parts of New South Wales. Charles Ebden (cricketer)
Charles Hotson Murray Ebden (29 June 1880 – 24 May 1949), sometimes known as Tommy Ebden, was an English cricketer active from 1902 to 1909 who played for Sussex and Middlesex in the County Championship. He also played first-class cricket for Cambridge University, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and Scotland, and with Lord Brackley's XI on tour in the West Indies. He was born in Westminster and died in Elvanfoot, Lanarkshire. He appeared in 40 first-class matches as a righthanded batsman who scored 1,465 runs with a highest score of 137. Ebden also represented England at hockey. Ebden was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. John Bardwell Ebden
John Bardwell Ebden M.L.C. (9 April 1787 - 22 September 1873) was a businessman and politician of the Cape Colony, South Africa. He dominated Cape Town commerce for over sixty years in the 19th century, and was an unofficial member of the Cape Legislative Council. An ambitious and combative personality, he was known by the nickname "the stormy petrel", due to his reputation of frequently being in fights. Early life JB Ebden was born on 9 April 1787 in Loddon, Norfolk, England, the son of John Ebden, an army surgeon, and Sarah Norman. He received little education, went to sea aged 16 in 1803, and traveled around the Torres Straits and China. On a second voyage, this time destined for India, he was shipwrecked off Cape Town. The 18 year old JB swam ashore in Table Bay (supposedly with a bag of gold in his fist). Matthew Ebden (born 26 November 1987) is an Australian professional tennis player. He is a two-time Grand Slam champion, having won the 2022 Wimbledon Championships in men's doubles alongside Max Purcell, and the 2013 Australian Open in mixed doubles with Jarmila Gajdošová. Ebden also finished runner-up at the 2022 Australian Open in men's doubles with Purcell, and the 2021 Australian Open and 2022 Wimbledon Championships in mixed doubles partnering Samantha Stosur. He reached his career-high doubles ranking of world No. 24 in January 2022, and has won six doubles titles on the ATP Tour, including the 2014 Mexican Open.
