Eastern Conference Records is an independent record label based in New York City. It is owned and operated by DJ Mighty Mi, the DJ/producer for the High & Mighty. During the label's brief heyday, it represented underground rappers such as Cage, Tame One (one-half of the duo The Artifacts), R.A. the Rugged Man, and The Weathermen, a supergroup created by Copywrite78 ( rapper , producer ) MHz and Cage, Aesop Rock, Copywrite, Tame One, Breeze Brewin of the Juggaknots, El-P, Camu Tao, and Yak Ballz. History Beginnings Mr. Eon established the Eastern Conference imprint in 1996, in the midst of the late nineties indie boom of rap. Stones Throw Records is an American independent record label based in Los Angeles, California. Under the direction of founder Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw has released music ranging from hip hop to experimental psychedelic rock. '' LA Weekly'' deemed the label an "eternally evolving experiment" in celebration of its 20th anniversary. History Chris Manak, known professionally as Peanut Butter Wolf, founded Stones Throw in 1996 as a means of releasing music he had recorded previously with the subsequently deceased rapper Charles Edward Hicks Jr., known professionally as Charizma. Hicks and Manak met in 1989 at 16 and 19, respectively, and began collaborating as Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf. The duo released one promo cassette of "Red Light Green Light" through Hollywood Basic—the now-defunct hip-hop subsidiary of Hollywood Records—before leaving the label. ''Nighthawks'' is the only studio album by American hip hop duo Nighthawks, which consisted of rappers Cage and Camu Tao. It was released on November 26, 2002 under Eastern Conference Records. The album is a rap opera concept album. Background ''Nighthawks'' came to be through Cage's love for police movies. It puts Cage and Camu Tao in the personas of fictional police detectives "Deke DaSilva" and "Matthew Fox". The album was created in a one-week creative binge. Definitive Jux
Definitive Jux was a record label based in New York City. It was co-founded in 1999 by El-P and Amaechi Uzoigwe. History Definitive Jux was initially known as Def Jux. However, popular hip hop label Def Jam Recordings sued Def Jux over the name similarity in 2001. This lawsuit was settled out of court and the name was officially changed to Definitive Jux. In February 2010, El-P announced that the label, although it will carry on selling its catalog and merchandise, would be put "on hiatus" as a traditional record label, and that it would be going through some changes in order to keep up with the evolution of the music industry. He also announced that he was stepping down as artistic director of Definitive Jux to focus on producing and being a full-time artist. Reef The Lost Cauze
Sharif Talib Lacey, better known by his stage name Reef the Lost Cauze, is an underground hip hop artist based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Cauze became well known on the underground circuit towards the late 1990s and more so in the early 2000s, making his mark by winning many battle competitions within New York and interstate and displaying rare skills of what many called true MCing. Antonio Hardy (born September 10, 1968), better known by his stage name Big Daddy Kane, is an American rapper who began his career in 1986 as a member of the Juice Crew. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and skilled MCs in hip hop. ''Soundbombing'' is a hip hop compilation album by Rawkus Records, released on October 14, 1997. The album helped launch the careers of Mos Def and Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek), who later became Rawkus's most popular artists. ''Soundbombing'' is regarded as a "scene-defining" underground hip hop album. Background After the critical success of Company Flow's '' Funcrusher Plus'' album, released a few months prior, Rawkus returned with a compilation that showcased their growing roster. Mixed by DJ Evil Dee of Da Beatminerz, the album is sequenced like a mixtape, staying true to the label's underground roots. Donnie Shaquan Lewis, (born June 2, 1974) also known as Skillz, or Mad Skillz is an American rapper known for his acclaimed 1996 album ''From Where???'', a reference to his origins in Virginia, not a New York City or Los Angeles rapper. He is also known for his yearly "Rap Ups," which he has done annually since 2002 (except in 2013).
