On 22 June 1974, East Germany played West Germany in Hamburg as part of the first group stage of the 1974 FIFA World Cup. East Germany won the match 1–0, in what is regarded as one of the greatest upsets in FIFA World Cup history. The match is also notable for being the only time East and West Germany ever played each other in top-level senior international competition. Franz Beckenbauer
Franz Anton Beckenbauer (; 11 September 1945 – 7 January 2024) was a German professional football player, manager, and official. Bernd Bransch
Bernd Bransch (24 September 1944 – 11 June 2022) was a footballer from East Germany who played as a sweeper. Career Bransch began his sporting career as a youngster at BSG Motor Halle-Süd. The son of a locksmith was then allowed to join sports club SC Chemie Halle in 1954. Bransch played throughout his career for SC Chemie Halle and its successor, Hallescher FC Chemie – except for the 1973/74 season, in which he played for FC Carl Zeiss Jena. In 1968 and 1974 he was honoured as East German Footballer of the Year. Jürgen Croy
Jürgen Croy (born 19 October 1946) is a German former professional association football, footballer who played as a goalkeeper (association football), goalkeeper. He made 86 appearances for the East Germany national football team, East Germany national team. Club career Born in Zwickau, Croy spent his entire footballing career at FSV Zwickau, BSG Sachsenring Zwickau (today FSV Zwickau), with which he won the East German Cup in 1967 and 1975. Josef Dieter "Sepp" Maier (; born 28 February 1944) is a German former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Bayern Munich and the West Germany national team. Jürgen Sparwasser
Jürgen Sparwasser (born 4 June 1948 in Halberstadt) is a retired German football player and, later, briefly a football manager. Sparwasser began his playing career in the youth department of his hometown club BSG Lokomotive Halberstadt in 1956. In 1965, he moved to 1. FC Magdeburg, where he made his senior debut in January 1966. He would remain with the club until 1979, when a hip injury ended his career. Over the course of his career, he played in 271 DDR-Oberliga matches as a midfielder, scoring 111 goals. Hans-Jürgen Kreische
Hans-Jürgen "Hansi" Kreische (born 19 July 1947) is a former East German footballer. Career Club career Kreische spent his entire career with his hometown club, Dynamo Dresden, scoring 127 goals in 234 DDR-Oberliga games between 1964 and 1978. He was East Germany's top scorer in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1976, and was player of the year in 1973. International career Kreische was an East German international, scoring 25 goals in 50 appearances.
