Eagles Nest (Colorado)
Eagles Nest is a mountain summit in Summit County, Colorado, United States. Description Eagles Nest is set in the Gore Range which is a subrange of the Rocky Mountains. The mountain is located north of the community of Vail in the Eagles Nest Wilderness on land managed by Arapaho National Forest. It ranks as the 2nd-highest peak in the Gore Range and the 2nd-highest in the wilderness. The nearest higher neighbor is Mount Powell, south-southeast, which is the highest of the range. Precipitation runoff from the mountain's east slope drains into Black Creek and the west slope drains to Cataract Creek which are both tributaries of the Blue River. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises over above Cataract Creek in 0.75 mile (1.21 km). The mountain's toponym was officially adopted in 1968 by the United States Board on Geographic Names. Mount Powell (Colorado)
Mount Powell is the highest summit of the Gore Range in the Rocky Mountains of North America. The prominent thirteener is located in the Eagles Nest Wilderness, north by east ( bearing 8°) of the Town of Vail, Colorado, United States, along the drainage divide separating White River National Forest and Eagle County from Arapaho National Forest and Summit County. Mount Powell was named in honor of John Wesley Powell who climbed to the summit in 1868. In mountaineering in the United States, a thirteener (abbreviated 13er) is a mountain that exceeds above mean sea level, similar to the more familiar "fourteeners," which exceed . In most instances, "thirteeners" refers only to those peaks between 13,000 and 13,999 feet in elevation. The importance of thirteeners is greatest in Colorado, which has the majority of such peaks in North America with over 600 of them. Despite the large number of peaks, over 20 peak baggers have reported climbing all of Colorado's thirteeners. Thirteeners are also significant in states whose highpoints fall between 13,000 and 13,999 feet. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936.
