Eagle Pass AFS
Eagle Pass Army Airfield is a former World War II military airfield complex. It is located north of Eagle Pass, Texas. It operated as a training base for the United States Army Air Forces from 1943 until 1945. Later, during the Cold War, Eagle Pass Air Force Station (ADC ID: TM-188) was a United States Air Force Radar facility. It was operated by Air Defense Command on the site of the World War II air base. Opened in 1957, it was closed in 1963. The facility was finally closed in 1991 when the United States Air Force ended its use of the airfield, having designated the field as Laughlin Air Force Auxiliary Landing Field #1 in 1962, using it as part of the pilot training school at Laughlin AFB. Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields is a website detailing information and first hand memories about airports in the United States which are no longer in operation, or are rarely used. The website was started by Paul Freeman in 1999 as he had developed an interest on the subject. In 2015, there were over 2,000 airports chronicled on the site and it had been viewed over 1.7 million times. In the US, airports close at about a rate of one per week. The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) is an American nonprofit educational and research organization dedicated to documenting the history of Texas. It was founded in Austin, Texas, United States, on March 2, 1897. In November 2008, the TSHA moved its offices from Austin to the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. In 2015, the offices were relocated again to the University of Texas at Austin. The 77th Flying Training Wing was a wing of the United States Army Air Forces. It was assigned to the Central Flying Training Command, and was based in Texas between 1943 and its disbandment on 16 June 1946. There is no lineage between the United States Air Force 77th Aeronautical Systems Wing, established on 5 February 1942 as the 77th Observation Group at Salinas Army Air Base, California, and this organization. Eagle Pass Municipal Airport is a former airport, located in Eagle Pass, Texas. Airport operations ended around 1998, being transferred to the Maverick County Memorial International Airport. Today the former airport is a commercial site. History Eagle Pass Municipal Airport was established by the Air Service, United States Army in 1919 as a military airfield. It was constructed as a base for observation overflights along the Mexican border.
