ENSCONET
The European Native Seeds Conservation Network (ENSCONET) was a Nature conservation, conservation project for the preservation of wild species by maintaining a germplasm bank. It was initially made up of 24 institutions from 17 member states of the European Union, as well as 5 associate members. The network was coordinated by the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership, Millennium Seed Bank of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, United Kingdom and was founded under the auspices of the 6th "Research Framework Program" of the EU, and covered 5 of the 6 European biogeographic regions. History Although the project had been in the making for several years, it was not until November 2004 that it was definitively consolidated. Millennium Seed Bank Partnership
The Millennium Seed Bank Partnership (MSBP or MSB), formerly known as the Millennium Seed Bank Project, is the largest ''ex situ'' plant conservation biology, conservation programme in the world, coordinated by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK. After being awarded a Millennium Commission grant in 1995, the project commenced in 1996, and is now housed in the Wellcome Trust Millennium Building situated in the grounds of Wakehurst Place, West Sussex. Its purpose is to provide an "insurance policy" against the extinction of plants in the wild by storing seeds for future use. The storage facilities consist of large underground frozen vaults preserving the world's largest wild-plant seedbank or collection of seeds from wild species. Nature conservation is the ethic/moral philosophy and conservation movement focused on protecting species from extinction, maintaining and restoring habitats, enhancing ecosystem services, and protecting biological diversity. A range of values underlie conservation, which can be guided by biocentrism, anthropocentrism, ecocentrism, and sentientism, environmental ideologies that inform ecocultural practices and identities. There has recently been a movement towards evidence-based conservation which calls for greater use of scientific evidence to improve the effectiveness of conservation efforts. As of 2018 15% of land and 7.3% of the oceans were protected. Many environmentalists set a target of protecting 30% of land and marine territory by 2030.
