Dagur B. Eggertsson
Dagur Bergþóruson Eggertsson (born 19 June 1972) is an Icelandic politician who is the Mayor of Reykjavík. He was the vice-chairman of the Social Democratic Alliance from 2009 until 2013. He was first elected to the city council of Reykjavík in a 2002 election and became the mayor on 16 October 2007. Dagur is formally educated as a physician but also has a master's degree in Human Rights and International Law from the University of Lund in Sweden. Professional career While studying at the University of Iceland, he was the chairman of the student council from 1994 to 1995 and managing director of the Icelandic Student Innovation Fund from 1995 to 1996. From 1995 to 1998, Dagur worked at the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, Channel 1, making programs. Mayor Of Reykjavík
The post of Mayor of Reykjavík ( is, Borgarstjóri Reykjavíkur) was created in 1907 and advertised in 1908. Páll Einarsson and Knud Zimsen applied for the job and Páll got the position for a period of six years, at the end of which he did not wish to renew his tenure. Rather than a direct election, Reykjavík City Council members elect the mayor from within their ranks. Between 1932 and 1994 the centre-right Independence Party dominated Reykjavík municipal politics, but since then other parties have been more competitive. Since 2003 seven people have held the mayor position, due to an unprecedented amount of instability in Reykjavík's municipal coalition government caused in part by the 2008–11 Icelandic financial crisis. The incumbent mayor is Dagur Bergþóruson Eggertsson, who was elected in 2014. Steingrímur Hermannsson
Steingrímur Hermannsson (pronounced ; 22 June 1928 – 1 February 2010) was an Icelandic politician who served as prime minister of Iceland from 1983 to 1987, and again from 1988 to 1991. Early childhood Steingrímur's father was Hermann Jónasson, another former Prime Minister. Being the son of a prominent official, Steingrímur enjoyed a relatively care-free upbringing in a country stricken by the Great Depression. As a young boy he had an exceptional proximity to Iceland's World War II politics, overhearing state affairs being discussed in his father's living room. Education Not wanting to follow his father's footsteps into politics, Steingrímur went to the U.S. in 1948. He received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1951 and a master's degree from Caltech in 1952. Ólafur Friðrik Magnússon (born 3 August 1952) is a former mayor of Reykjavík, Iceland. His term was from 24 January 2008 to 21 August 2008. He was originally expected to step down in March 2009, when a representative from the Independence Party was to assume the office of the mayor, as agreed upon in the coalition agreement between Ólafur and the Independence Party. According to that same agreement Ólafur would at the same time become the chairman of the executive committee of the City Council of Reykjavík. Árbær () is a district within the city of Reykjavík, Iceland. It includes five neighbourhoods: ''Árbær'' proper, ''Ártúnsholt'' , ''Norðlingaholt'' , ''Selás'' and the industrial area ''Hálsar'' . The area has approximately 13,000 inhabitants. It is located in the eastern part of the city. At the heart of Árbær are the Elliðaár river and valley. History The core residential part was built in the 1960s to 1970s in a Nordic functionalistic style, similar to nearby Breiðholt. Development of the outer parts started in the 1980s and continued well into the 90s. The 2000s saw the construction of Norðlingaholt at the eastern edge of the city, as well as a new commercial lot adjacent to the oldest part. 2014 Icelandic Municipal Elections
Municipal elections took place in Iceland on 31 May 2014. 66% of eligible voters cast votes, the lowest proportion since Iceland gained independence. As part of a pledge, Mayor Jón Gnarr's Best Party did not participate in the election and was dissolved after the election was held. Results Overall Results in Reykjavík In total, 56,896 votes were cast. Of these, 2,024 were blank and 227 were invalid. On 11 June 2014, a coalition was announced of the Social Democrats, Bright Future, the Left-Greens, and the Pirate Party. Dagur B. Eggertsson, of the Social Democrats, became the new mayor, while the Left-Green councillor Sóley Tómasdóttir became president of the city council and Sigurður Björn Blöndal of Bright Future became the city council chairperson. Best Party
The Best Party ( is, Besti flokkurinn) was an Icelandic political party founded by Jón Gnarr on 16 November 2009. The party ran in the 2010 city council election in Reykjavík and won a plurality on the Reykjavík City Council, receiving 34.7% of the vote, defeating the Independence Party which received 33.6%. It was a member of the International Pirate Party, but not associated with the Pirate Party Iceland. Jón Gnarr announced that the party was to be dissolved after he stepped down as mayor after the upcoming local elections in May 2014.
