Dörte Haftendorn
Dörte Haftendorn (born March 25, 1948) is a German mathematician, mathematics education, mathematics educator, and textbook author who works as a professor at Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Education and career Haftendorn earned her PhD in 1975 from the Clausthal University of Technology. Her dissertation, ''Additiv kommutative und idempotente Halbringe mit Faktorbedingung'' [''Additive, commutative, and idempotent semirings with the factor condition''], concerned the theory of semirings and was supervised by Hanns J. Weinert. She taught at the Johanneum gymnasium in Lüneburg from 1975 until 2002, when she became a professor at Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Semiring
In abstract algebra, a semiring is an algebraic structure. Semirings are a generalization of rings, dropping the requirement that each element must have an additive inverse. At the same time, semirings are a generalization of bounded distributive lattices. The smallest semiring that is not a ring is the two-element Boolean algebra, for instance with logical disjunction \lor as addition.
