Döbling Cemetery
The Döbling Cemetery (Döblinger Friedhof) is a cemetery in the 19th district of Döbling in Vienna, Austria. Location The cemetery lies in the south of Döbling on the border to Währing in the Katastralgemeinde of Oberdöbling, in the Hartäckerstraße. The cemetery's limits are defined in the south by the Peter-Jordan-Straße, in the west by the Borkowskigasse and in the north by the Hartäckergasse. It thus covers an area of 49,981 m2 and provides space for 6853 plots. History Older cemeteries in Döbling Traditionally, Unterdöbling’s dead were buried at the Heiligenstadt cemetery, while those from Oberdöbling were buried around the Döbling Parish Church. The latter was expanded in 1781; records exist of its use until 1783. When the church was torn down and rebuilt in 1826, the graveyard was presumably abandoned. John Haswell
John Haswell (20 March 1812 – 8 June 1897) was a Scottish engineer and locomotive designer. He was born on 20 March 1812 in Lancefield, Glasgow, Scotland, studied at ''Anderson's University'' in Glasgow and worked for 22 years in the shipbuilding office of ''William Fairbairn & Co''. In 1837 at the prompting of Matthias Schönerer, who was also heavily involved in the Budweis–Linz–Gmunden wagonway, he drew up plans for the repair shop of the Wien-Raaber railway (later Lokomotivfabrik der StEG), and in 1839 became entrusted with carrying them out, along with the mechanical engineer ''Kraft''. Caroline von Gomperz-Bettelheim, or C(K)aroline Bettelheim, ''pseudonym: Tellheim'' ( hu, Bettelheim-Gomperz Caroline; 1 June 1845, in Pest – 13 December 1925, in Vienna) was a Hungarian-Austrian court singer and member of the Royal Opera, Vienna. Her younger brother was Anton Bettelheim. She was born at Pest (Budapest), Hungary. She studied pianoforte with Karl Goldmark, and singing with Moritz Laufer. At the age of 14, she made her début as a pianist, and two years later appeared for the first time in opera at Vienna. She eventually obtained a permanent engagement at the Royal Opera in that city. Theodor Gomperz
Theodor Gomperz (March 29, 1832August 29, 1912), Austrian philosopher and classical scholar, was born at Brno (Brünn). Biography Gomperz studied at Brno and at Vienna under Hermann Bonitz. Graduating at the University of Vienna in 1867 he became ''privatdozent'', and subsequently a professor of classical philology (1873). In 1882 he was elected a full member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences. He received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy ''honoris causa'' from the University of Königsberg, and Doctor of Literature from the universities of Dublin and Cambridge, and became correspondent for several learned societies. Gomperz resigned his professorship at Vienna in order to devote all his energy to his magnum opus ''Griechische Denker'' ("Greek Thinkers"), which first appeared in 1893. He died in Baden bei Wien. Hugo Charlemont (18 March 1850 – 18 April 1939) was an Austrian painter. Born in Jemnice, Moriva he was the son of Matthais Adolf Charlemont. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts. Lorenz Böhler (15 January 1885 in Wolfurt, Austria – 20 January 1973 in Vienna) was an Austrian physician and surgeon. Böhler is most notable as one of the creators of modern accident surgery. He was the head of the AUVA-Hospital in Vienna, Brigittenau, that was later named after him: Lorenz-Böhler-Unfallkrankenhaus. This hospital was an international model during his time as the leading surgeon there. In radiology, the measurement of ''Böhler's angle'' on a foot X-ray can help detect fractures of the calcaneus.
