Dwesa Nature Reserve
Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa that is managed by Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency. The park has an area of . The Dwesa-Cwebe Marine Protected Area, that has been added to the park has an area of . On one side, the reserve is surrounded by the Indian Ocean, and on the other by the rugged pastures of the former Transkei. About 290 species of birds have been recorded in the park. From the top of Kobole Point, there are magnificent views across the ocean. History The Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve was originally land owned by local farmers. Currently, debates in South African politics over land ownership and environmental sustainability are shaping who gets to control the land. The nature reserve was initially conceived to protect one of the last known coastal forests in South Africa, and also because farming practices were believed to be destroying the local ecosystem. Eastern Cape Province
The Eastern Cape is one of the provinces of South Africa. Its capital is Bhisho, but its two largest cities are East London and Gqeberha. The second largest province in the country (at 168,966 km2) after Northern Cape, it was formed in 1994 out of the Xhosa homelands or bantustans of Transkei and Ciskei, together with the eastern portion of the Cape Province. Dwesa-Cwebe Marine Protected Area
The Dwesa-Cwebe Marine Protected Area is an inshore and offshore conservation region, off the coast of the Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve in the Eastern Cape province, in the territorial waters of South Africa. History The area was initially declared as a marine reserve in 1989 by the Transkei government. The MPA was proclaimed by the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mohammed Valli Moosa, in Government Gazette No. 21948 of 29 December 2000 in terms section 43 of the Marine Living Resources Act, 18 of 1998. The extension was proclaimed by Bomo Edith Edna Molewa, Minister of Environmental Affairs under Section 22A of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, 2003 (Act No. 57 of 2003) to take effect on the 1 December 2015.
