Duranbah Beach
Duranbah Beach ( ), officially known as Flagstaff Beach, is the northernmost beach in New South Wales. Located in the Tweed Shire, Duranbah Beach is situated between the mouth of the Tweed River and the rocky headland Point Danger which also marks the Queensland-New South Wales border. The beach is 350 meters in length with vegetated dunes running along 200 metres. The southern end of the beach features BBQs, sheltered picnic areas including a block of toilets and shower just behind it. Duranbah Beach is well known by surfers for its surf break and large swell. It is recognised both nationally and internationally as having a powerful, high-quality surf break for both surfers and boogs (a boog getting a barrel shown in the image). Big surfing events have been staged there including the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, the professional surfing contest which was held in conjunction with Snapper Rocks and the state, national and international bodyboarding contests. Tweed Shire
Tweed Shire is a local government area located in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. It is adjacent to the border with Queensland, where that meets the Tasman Sea. Administered from the town of Murwillumbah, Tweed Shire covers an area of , and has existed as a local government entity since 1947. It was named for the Tweed River. The current mayor of Tweed Shire Council is Cr. Chris Cherry. History The European history of the Tweed Shire began in 1823 when the Tweed River was explored by John Oxley. After sheltering on Cook Island (4 km from the river's mouth), Oxely travelled up river. In 1828, Captain H. J. Rous explored up the river. Settlers began to arrive in 1828, the first of which were the cedar getters, who came to harvest Great Red Cedars and send them back to England. Tweed River (New South Wales)
The Tweed River is a river situated in the Northern Rivers district of New South Wales, Australia. From the middle reaches of its course, the state boundary between New South Wales and Queensland is located approximately north. The river rises on the eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range; with its watershed bordered by the McPherson, Burringbar, Condong and Tweed ranges and containing a catchment area of . The river flows generally north east, joined by eight tributaries including the Oxley and Rous rivers before reaching its mouth at its confluence with the Coral Sea of the South Pacific Ocean, south of Point Danger; descending over its course. On its journey, it passes through the major urban centres of Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads. Point Danger (Tweed Heads)
Point Danger is a headland, located at Coolangatta on the southern end of the Gold Coast on the east coast of Australia. Separated by Snapper Rocks and Rainbow Bay to the west, with Duranbah Beach and the Tweed River mouth to the south, present-day Point Danger has also indicated the border between New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, since 1863. The point is the location of the Captain Cook memorial and lighthouse, the Centaur Memorial and Walk of Remembrance, the Marine Rescue NSW Point Danger station, and the southern end of the Gold Coast Oceanway. The Centaur Memorial remembers the sinking of Australian Hospital Ship ''Centaur'' by a Japanese submarine on 14 May 1943.
