''Dunya'' () is the debut studio album by Canadian folk singer Mustafa, released on September 27, 2024, through Arts & Crafts domestically and Jagjaguwar internationally. Collaborators on the album include Aaron Dessner, Daniel Caesar, Rosalía, Nicolás Jaar, JID, and Clairo. Most of the album's writing and production was done abroad, including in North Africa, and its songs incorporate traditional Arabic musical instruments such as the oud. The album received widespread acclaim and appeared on a number of critics' year-end lists, as well as being long-listed for the Polaris music prize. It was supported by five singles: "Name of God", "Imaan", "Gaza Is Calling", "SNL", and "Old Life". The music video for "Name of God" won the 2024 Prism Prize, making Mustafa the first artist to win the award twice. Mustafa Ahmed (born 28 July 1996), known as Mustafa, formerly known as Mustafa the Poet, is a Canadian poet, singer, songwriter, and filmmaker from Toronto. He released his debut EP, '' When Smoke Rises'', in May 2021. His debut album, ''Dunya'', was released on September 27, 2024. Early life Mustafa Ahmed was born in Toronto, Ontario to Sudanese parents. He grew up in Regent Park, one of Toronto's oldest housing projects. Mustafa attended Regent Park Duke of York Public School. Mustafa first came to fame for his poetry. He was inspired to write by his older sister, who taught him the healing effects of poetry at a young age. When he was in the seventh grade, Mustafa performed an original piece, "A Single Rose", at Nelson Mandela Park Public School. Claire Elizabeth Cottrill (born August 18, 1998), known professionally as Clairo, is an American singer-songwriter. She began posting music on the internet at age 13. Clairo rose to prominence following the viral success of the music video for her Lo-fi music, lo-fi single "Pretty Girl (Clairo song), Pretty Girl" in 2017. Jahvante Jahqwane Sheldon Smart ( – ), known professionally as Smoke Dawg, was a Canadian rapper from Toronto, Ontario. He was a part of hip hop collective Halal Gang alongside Mustafa the Poet, Puffy L'z, Safe, and Mo-G who come together with the Prime Boys to make the supergroup Full Circle. Halal Gang
Halal Gang is a Canadian hip hop collective based in Toronto, Ontario. The name stems from the preponderance of the group having Muslim origins with East African and Caribbean Canadian roots. Initially the group is said to have stemmed out from a gang participating in criminal activity. The group was established in 2010 as a group of youths from Regent Park inspired to make music. The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is the largest documentary festival in North America. The event takes place annually in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
