Dunlop Cup (Scotland)
The Dunlop Cup was a professional golf tournament played annually in Scotland from 1909 to 1912. History Entry was restricted to PGA members of the Scottish section and other professionals attached to a Scottish club. Prize money was £25, with £20 for the winner and £5 for the runner-up. The cup became the permanent property of any player who won it three times or two years in succession. Robert Thomson won in 1911 and 1912, so he won the cup outright. Robert Thomson (golfer)
Robert Thomson (16 December 1875 – 1954) was a Scottish professional golfer who played in the late 19th century into the early 20th century. Thomson had two career top-10 finishes in the Open Championship. In 1903 he finished tied for 6th place and in 1905 finished 7th. Early life Thomson was born in North Berwick, Scotland, on 16 December 1875. He was the son of William Thomson, a fisherman, and his wife Margaret Lawrie. His father died at an early age and Thomson resided with his mother and elder brothers James and William in Russell Square. One of his first postings as a professional was at Grantham Golf Club where he stayed only a short time before returning to the West Links. The British PGA Matchplay Championship was a match play golf tournament that began in 1903 and ran until 1979. Between 1903 and 1969, the event was sponsored by the now defunct British newspaper the ''News of the World'', and was commonly known by the paper's name. Initially organised as the championship of British professionals, the event came to include invited players from other countries – in particular from around the Commonwealth (it was won on four occasions by Australia's Peter Thomson, a record number of victories shared with Dai Rees and James Braid). Davie Watt
David Paterson Watt (1885 – 25 April 1917) was a Scottish professional golfer. He won the Scottish Professional Championship in 1914. He was one of the few left-handed golfers of the period. Watt was in the Cameron Highlanders during World War I but died following a leg amputation. Early life Watt was born in 1885 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. He had four golfing brothers: Jim, John, Robert and Willie. Golf career While at Dirleton, Watt was runner-up to Willie Binnie in the 1909 Dunlop Cup, taking the second prize of £5. David Kinnell
David Kinnell (1879 – January 1951) was a Scottish professional golfer who played in the late 19th and early 20th century. Kinnell had two top-10 finishes in the Open Championship. His best performance came in the 1908 Open Championship when he finished tied for fifth place. He also had a good performance in the 1898 Open Championship, finishing in the sixth position. Early life and career Kinnell was born in Leven, Fife, Scotland, in 1879. He served as the head professional at Leven Thistle Golf Club. Appointed professional to succeed his brother James at Prestwick St Nicholas, he laid out an 18-hole course for the Ladies Club in 1906 with Charlie Hunter. Tom Fernie
Thomas Robert Fernie (1 February 1890 – 13 December 1952) was a Scottish professional golfer. He won the Scottish Professional Championship four times and finished in 5th place in the 1923 Open Championship. He was the son of Willie Fernie who won the 1883 Open Championship. Golf career Fernie won the Scottish Professional Championship four times, in 1909, 1910, 1919 and 1920 and was runner-up in 1922 and 1925. He was also runner-up in the 1910 Dunlop Cup. In 1911 Fernie became professional at Turnberry. He finished in 5th place in the 1923 Open Championship. The following year he withdrew from the Open qualifying because of the death of his father. He won the Scottish PGA Championship, Scottish Professional Championship in 1912 and tied for 8th place in the 1923 Open Championship.
