Dunlea Centre, prior to 2010 known as Boys' Town Engadine, is an Australian dormitory, residential secondary school for adolescent young people. Its specialised program provides therapeutic support and education to young people who might be experiencing emotional, behavioural and/or social difficulties. The school is located in the Sydney suburb of Engadine, New South Wales, Engadine, New South Wales and is run by specialist teachers and social workers. Dunlea Centre's Primary Program caters to students from Years 3 to 6 (ages 8-12), offering a supportive and nurturing environment where students receive quality education along with individualised support to address their specific needs. Engadine, New South Wales
Engadine is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Engadine is located south of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. History The area was reserved for a national park in 1879, but in 1890 Charles McAlister was able to purchase land here which became known as McAlister's Estate. After an overseas trip, the family renamed their estate 'Engadine' after the Engadin Valley in Switzerland. The wildflowers in the valley here and surrounding national parks were reminiscent of the valley and hills in Engadin. Charles McAlister subdivided his land sometime after 1900. He continued to live in Engadine but later moved to Cronulla, where he died in 1915. Dan Minogue (politician)
Daniel Patrick Minogue (18 July 1893 – 7 January 1983) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ireland and worked as a shopkeeper and hotelier before entering politics. He served on the Sydney City Council from 1938 to 1950, leading the Lang Labor faction on the council. He later represented the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in the House of Representatives from 1949 to 1969, holding the seat of West Sydney. Crescent Street in Glebe was renamed Minogue Crescent in his honour and the Minogue Reserve in Glebe was similarly named after him. Early life Minogue was born on 18 July 1893 in Feakle, County Clare, Ireland, the son of Elizabeth () and Patrick Minogue. He was educated at the local national school. Chris Riley (priest)
Christopher Keith Riley, SDB is an Australian Roman Catholic priest. He is a member of the Salesian order and the founder and CEO of the charity Youth Off The Streets. On 3 April 2021, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that Father Riley was gravely ill with a variety of ailments. Early years Riley was born in Echuca, Victoria, in 1954 and grew up on a dairy farm in the district. In 1973 he graduated from a school run by the Salesians. He was inspired by the movie '' Boys Town'' and went on to train as a teacher. He has worked as a teacher, youth worker, probation officer, residential care worker and principal of the charity Boy's Town. In 1982 he was ordained a priest at Oakleigh, Victoria. Backpacker Murders
The backpacker murders were a spate of serial killings that took place in New South Wales, Australia, between 1989 and 1993, committed by Ivan Milat. The bodies of seven missing young people aged 19 to 22 were discovered partially buried in the Belanglo State Forest, south-west of the New South Wales town of Berrima. Five of the victims were foreign backpackers (three German, two British) and two were Australians from Melbourne. Milat, then 51 years old, was convicted of the murders on 27 July 1996 and was sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences, as well as 18 years without parole. He died in prison on 27 October 2019, having never confessed to the murders for which he was convicted. Ivan Robert Marko Milat (27 December 1944 – 27 October 2019), commonly referred to in media as the Backpacker Murderer, was an Australian serial killer who abducted, assaulted, robbed and murdered two men and five women in New South Wales between 1989 and 1992. John Trevor Patten (13 June 1936 – 15 April 2020), known professionally as Johnny Jarrett, was an Australian Aboriginal elder and community leader, former professional rugby league footballer and professional boxer. Biography John Patten was born in 1936 to John Thomas Patten and Selina Patten, née Avery at Sydney in New South Wales and is a descendant of the Yorta Yorta and Bundjalung peoples.
