Dunlap Creek (Virginia)
Dunlap Creek is a U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map , accessed April 1, 2011 tributary of the Jackson River in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is part of the James River watershed. The creek forms at Earlehurst in Alleghany County, Virginia, by the confluence of Back Creek and Sweet Springs Creek, both of which rise to the southwest in Monroe County, West Virginia. Dunlap Creek flows northeast, paralleled by State Route 311 as far as the village of Crows. The creek continues northeast, now followed by State Route 159, past the villages of Hematite and Moss Run, then turns more easterly where it is crossed by Interstate 64 east of Callaghan. Now followed by U.S. Route 60, the creek passes the village of Dunlap Beach and joins the Jackson River north of the center of the city of Covington. Covington, Virginia
Covington is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,737, making it the second-least populous city in Virginia. It is surrounded by Alleghany County, of which it is also the county seat. Located at the confluence of Jackson River and Dunlap Creek, Covington is one of three cities (with Roanoke and Salem) in the Roanoke Regional Partnership. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Covington with Alleghany county for statistical purposes. History Covington is named in honor of General Leonard Covington, hero of the War of 1812 and friend of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. Virginia State Route 159
State Route 159 (SR 159) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Dunlap Creek Road, the state highway runs from SR 311 at Crows north to Interstate 64 (I-64) and U.S. Route 60 (US 60) at Callaghan. SR 159 forms part of the old alignment of US 60 in western Alleghany County. All of SR 159 is a Virginia Byway. Route description SR 159 begins at a wye intersection with SR 311 (Kanawha Trail) in the hamlet of Crows in southwestern Alleghany County. The state highway heads northeast and parallels Dunlap Creek through its valley between Peters Mountain to the east and Brushy Mountain to the west. SR 159 passes through the hamlets of Hematite and Moss Run within the valley. As the state highway approaches Callaghan, it veers away from the creek and passes under CSX's Alleghany Subdivision.
