Dunkerton Bridge
The Dunkerton Bridge is a historic structure located in Dunkerton, Iowa, United States. The span carried a local street over Crane Creek for . The three-span, filled spandrel arch bridge was built by the Marsh Engineering Company of Des Moines in 1909. It replaced an older span at a different location. The bridge served as the major entry point into the town from the north. with This bridge was also replaced by a newer bridge to the east, and this span now carries pedestrian traffic between Charma Park and Marble Street into downtown Dunkerton. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Dunkerton, Iowa
Dunkerton is a city in Black Hawk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 842 at the time of the 2020 census. It is part of the Waterloo– Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1853, two brothers, James and John Dunkerton, walked from Dubuque, Iowa, to stake out a claim of land near Lester. This claim became the town known as Lesterton, and later Dunkerton. In 1854, John died and was buried in the small cemetery, which now holds four generations of Dunkertons. James remained and built up his land. On December 25, 1854, he married Christiana Hodges. At 60 years of age, James and his eldest son, sold a portion of their land to the railroad, requesting that the railroad be extended to Iowa. This act enabled the present City of Dunkerton to be established. The Marsh Engineering Company was a company that designed many significant bridges in the United States, including a number that survive and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was located at 206 Masonic Temple in Des Moines, Iowa. The firm's principal engineer was James Barney Marsh (1856–1936), an engineer and bridge designer born in North Lake, Wisconsin.
