Duncan Stewart (Uruguayan Politician)
Duncan Antonio Stewart Agell (1833 – 1923), was a Uruguayan president of Scottish Argentine origin. He served as interim President of Uruguay for a brief time in 1894. Family background He was the son of a marriage between Scotsman Duncan Stewart (of Acharn) and Uruguayan Dorotea Agell. Little is known about his life, but it is known he was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1833. His niece Matilde Pacheco married José Batlle y Ordóñez, who was later to become a long-serving Uruguayan President. His grand-nephews César Batlle Pacheco and Lorenzo Batlle Pacheco each served as a Deputy and Senator, and Rafael Batlle Pacheco was a notable journalist. Duncan George Stewart CMG (22 October 1904 – 10 December 1949) was a British colonial administrator and governor. He was mortally wounded in an assassination on 3 December 1949, in Sibu, Sarawak. Early life Stewart was born in Witkleifontein on 22 October 1904 in the Transvaal Colony (now part of South Africa) to expatriate Britons who were posted in that area and was educated in England at Winchester College and Oriel College, Oxford, where he graduated with a BA. Duncan Stewart (born ?1732 at Ardsheal) was 10th Chief of the Clan Stewart of Appin and 6th of Ardsheal, and a friend of James Boswell. He was the eldest surviving son of Charles Stewart, 5th of Ardsheal, the Jacobite leader of the Clan at the Battle of Culloden, 16 April 1746, during the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and Isabel Haldane of Lanrick daughter of John Haldane 2nd of Lanrick. Stewart was born at Ardsheal, from where his father Charles Stewart (5th of Ardsheal) had fled to France, dying at Sens, 15 March 1757, having escaped from Scotland in 1746. After the Battle of Culloden, he was tried ''in absentia'' for high treason, sentenced to death, and all his estates had been confiscated by the Forfeited Estates Commission. Duncan Stewart is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera ''Home and Away''. He made his first appearance during the episode broadcast on 14 June 1989. He was initially portrayed by Allana Ellis, with actor Lewis Devaney taking over the role from 1990 to 1998. Brendan McKensy assumed the role in 1998 until Duncan's departure in 2001. Duncan Stewart (born 24 May 1984) is a Scottish professional golfer who was born in Grantown-on-Spey, Scotland. He turned professional in 2007 and played on mini-tours, winning three events on the PGA EuroPro Tour from 2011 to 2012. In 2012, he finished second in the EuroPro Tour Order of Merit, to earn a place on the Challenge Tour for 2013. Duncan Stewart (born 1948) is an Irish architect, environmentalist and media personality known for his environmental activism and work on RTÉ, most notably in the show ''Eco Eye'' since 2002. He secured his primary degree from UCD. His niece, Louise Morris from Wales is often credited as being the influence for his pursuit in the fight against climate change. He remains the co-presenter of Eco Eye on RTÉ. In 1969-70, while still a student, Stewart led the six-month occupation of a row of seven large Georgian houses on Hume Street, Dublin, in protest at their planned demolition in favour of a new office block.
