Dumfries F.C. (1869)
Dumfries Football Club was an association football club from Dumfries, Scotland. History The club was one of the first clubs founded in Scotland; the only other Borders club older than the Dumfries club was the Annan (N.B.) club formed in December 1867. Dumfries was founded in October 1869 as a rugby union club, but changed to association rules in 1870. The club however switched back to rugby union in 1877; the club's final reported association match was a 2–0 defeat to Maybole in October 1877. The name was used by at least two other senior other clubs later, the next existing from 1889 to 1892, and the third merging into Queen of the South F.C. Dumfries ( ; sco, Dumfries; from gd, Dùn Phris ) is a market town and former royal burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland. It is located near the mouth of the River Nith into the Solway Firth about by road from the Anglo-Scottish border and just away from Cumbria by air. Dumfries is the county town of the historic county of Dumfriesshire. Before becoming King of Scots, Robert the Bruce killed his rival the Red Comyn at Greyfriars Kirk in the town on 10 February 1306. The Young Pretender had his headquarters here during a 3-day sojourn in Dumfries towards the end of 1745. During the Second World War, the bulk of the Norwegian Army during their years in exile in Britain consisted of a brigade in Dumfries. Dumfries is nicknamed ''Queen of the South''. Maybole is a town and former burgh of barony and police burgh in South Ayrshire, Scotland. It had an estimated population of in . It is situated south of Ayr and southwest of Glasgow by the Glasgow and South Western Railway. The town is bypassed by the A77. History Maybole has Middle Ages roots, receiving a charter from Donnchadh, Earl of Carrick in 1193. In 1516 it was made a burgh of regality, although for generations it remained under the suzerainty of the Kennedys, afterwards Earls of Cassillis and (later) Marquesses of Ailsa, the most powerful family in Ayrshire. The Marquess of Ailsa lived at Cassillis House, just outside Maybole until its sale in 2007. In the late seventeenth century, a census recorded Maybole was home to 28 "lords and landowners with estates in Carrick and beyond." Heston is a suburban area and part of the Hounslow district in the London Borough of Hounslow.
