The title of Duke of Polignac ( French: ''Duc de Polignac'') was a French dukedom that was held by the Polignac family. History The title was originally created for Jules de Polignac in 1780 by brevet, which meant it was not hereditary. It was made heritable in 1783 according to masculine primogeniture. In 1817, the holder was made a peer of France, granting him the right to sit in the Chamber of Peers of the Bourbon Restoration. The third duke, Jules, a younger son of the first duke, was created (before his succession to the dukedom) a prince of the Papal States in 1820, authorised to bear the title in France in 1822, and granted the same title in the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1838, which extended it to his male-line descendants. Prince Edmond Melchior Jean Marie de Polignac (19 April 18348 August 1901) was a French aristocrat and composer. Ancestry Edmond was a member of the Polignac family, one of the more illustrious families of France. His grandmother, the duchesse de Polignac, had been the close friend of Queen Marie Antoinette. His father, Jules de Polignac, prince de Polignac (1780–1847), was the Minister of State in the Restoration government of King Charles X and the author of the ''July Ordinances'' in 1830, which revoked the Constitution, suspended freedom of the press, and gave the king extraordinary powers, including absolute power in the name of "insuring the safety of the state". Alphonse de Polignac (1826–1863) was a French mathematician and aristocrat. He is known for Polignac's Conjecture. Biography His father, Jules de Polignac (1780-1847) was prime minister of Charles X until the Bourbon dynasty was overthrown in the July Revolution of 1830. Alphonse was born in London during his father's time as ambassador to the United Kingdom. In 1849 he was admitted to Polytechnique and went onto serve in the Crimean War as an artillery officer, achieving the rank of Captain. He was also a historian, a poet, a musician, and authored a translation of the play Faust by Goethe.
