Dual Irish International Footballers
Dual Irish international footballers are a group of Irish international association footballers who, between 1908 and March 1950, played for the international teams selected by both the Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Ireland. During this era at least 39 players represented both teams at a senior level. Ireland National Football Team (FAI)
The Republic of Ireland Men's national football team () represents the Republic of Ireland in men's international football. It is governed by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI). The team made their debut at the 1924 Summer Olympics, reaching the quarter-finals. Between 1924 and 1936, the team competed as the Irish Free State and from then until 1950, it was referred to by the FAI as Éire or Ireland. During the same period, another Ireland team also existed; this was overseen by the Irish Football Association (IFA) and had previously been the sole national team for the entire island of Ireland. Bill Hayes (footballer, Born 1915)
William Edward Hayes (7 November 1915 – 22 April 1987) was an Irish footballer who played for Huddersfield Town, Cork United and Burnley. As an international, Hayes played for both Ireland teams – the FAI XI and the IFA XI. Like fellow dual international, Billy Walsh, he also represented England Schoolboys. Another William Hayes also played for Ireland during the 1940s. Club career Huddersfield Town Hayes moved to England as a youth and played junior football in the Sheffield area before being spotted by Huddersfield Town as a teenager. In two spells with Town, either side of the Second World War, he made 184 league appearances and scored 5 league goals. 1938 FIFA World Cup Qualification
A total of 37 teams entered the 1938 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds, competing for a total of 16 spots in the final tournament. For the first time the title holders and the host country were given automatic qualification. Therefore, France, as the hosts, and Italy, as the defending champions, qualified automatically, leaving 14 spots open for competition. Tommy Breen
Tommy Breen (27 April 1912 – 2 March 1988) was an Irish footballer who played as a goalkeeper for, among others, Belfast Celtic, Manchester United, Linfield and Shamrock Rovers. Breen was a dual international and played for both Ireland teams: the IFA XI and the FAI XI. Breen replaced Elisha Scott as first-choice goalkeeper for both Belfast Celtic and the IFA XI and was rated by Billy Behan, one of his predecessors at Manchester United and a renowned scout, as one of the best goalkeepers Ireland ever produced. He was also the first Manchester United player ever to play for an FAI XI. Peter Kavanagh (Irish Footballer)
Peter Kavanagh (05 June 1908 – 15 February 1993) was an Irish footballer who played for, among others, Bohemians and Celtic. Kavanagh was a dual internationalist and played for both Ireland teams – the IFA XI and the FAI XI. After leaving Celtic, Kavanagh had spells with several clubs before finishing his career with a works team prior to the Second World War. He eventually settled in Glasgow where he died on 15 February 1993. Club career Bohemians Kavanagh played junior football in the Drumcondra area of Dublin before signing for Bohemians in 1927. Bohs manager, an ex- Rangers player, Bobby Parker, put the teenage Kavanagh straight into the first team.
