''Dromiceiomimus'' is a genus of ornithomimid theropod from the Late Cretaceous (early Maastrichtian) of Alberta, Canada. The type species, ''D. brevitertius'', is considered a synonym of ''Ornithomimus edmontonicus'' by some authors, while others consider it a distinct and valid taxon. It was a small ornithomimid that weighed about . Taxonomy The type species, ''D. brevitertius'' was originally described as a species of '' Struthiomimus'' by William Parks in 1926 on the basis of a partial postcranium, ROM 797, from the Horseshoe Canyon Formation of Alberta, Canada. In his review of Canadian ornithomimids, Dale Russell made ''S. brevitertius'' the type species of a new genus, ''Dromiceiomimus'', meaning "emu mimic" from the old generic name for the emu, ''Dromiceius''. Ornithomimus Edmontonicus
''Ornithomimus'' (; "bird mimic") is a genus of Ornithomimosauria, ornithomimid Theropoda, theropod dinosaurs from the Campanian and Maastrichtian ages of Late Cretaceous Laramidia, Western North America. ''Ornithomimus'' was a swift, bipedal dinosaur which fossil evidence indicates was covered in feathers and equipped with a small toothless beak that may indicate an omnivorous diet. It is usually classified into two species: the type species, ''Ornithomimus velox'', and a referred species, ''Ornithomimus edmontonicus''. Struthiomimus
''Struthiomimus'', meaning "ostrich-mimic" (from the Greek στρούθειος/''stroutheios'', or "of the ostrich", and μῖμος/''mimos'', meaning "mimic" or "imitator"), is a genus of ornithomimid dinosaurs from the late Cretaceous of North America. Ornithomimids were long-legged, bipedal, ostrich-like dinosaurs with toothless beaks. Ornithomimidae
Ornithomimidae (meaning "bird-mimics") is an extinct family of theropod dinosaurs which bore a superficial resemblance to modern ostriches. Ornithomimids were fast, omnivorous or herbivorous dinosaurs known mainly from the Late Cretaceous Period of Laurasia (now Asia and North America), though they have also been reported from the Lower Cretaceous Wonthaggi Formation of Australia. Description The skulls of ornithomimids were small, with large eyes, above relatively long and slender necks. All had toothless beaks. Dale Russell
Dale Alan Russell (27 December 1937 – 21 December 2019) was an American-Canadian geologist and palaeontologist. Throughout his career Russell worked as the Curator of Fossil Vertebrates at the Canadian Museum of Nature, Research Professor at the Department of Marine Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at North Carolina State University, and Senior Paleontologist at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Dinosaurs he has described include ''Daspletosaurus'' and ''Dromiceiomimus'', and he was amongst the first paleontologists to consider an extraterrestrial cause (supernova, comet, asteroid) for the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. William Parks (paleontologist)
William Arthur Parks (11 December 1868 – 3 October 1936) was a Canadian geologist and paleontologist, following in the tradition of Lawrence Lambe. Parks was born in Hamilton, Ontario. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1892, Parks joined the University of Toronto's staff, where he taught geology, paleontology, and mineralogy. He went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy, PhD in 1900. He wrote 80 scientific papers in his lifetime. Parks died in Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, in 1936. Horseshoe Canyon Formation
The Horseshoe Canyon Formation is a stratigraphic unit of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin in southwestern Alberta. It takes its name from Horseshoe Canyon, an area of badlands near Drumheller. The Horseshoe Canyon Formation is part of the Edmonton Group. In its type section (Red Deer River Valley at Drumheller), it is ~ thick, but further west the formation is older and thicker, exceeding near Calgary. It is of Late Cretaceous age, Campanian to early Maastrichtian stage (Edmontonian Land-Mammal Age), and is composed of mudstone, sandstone, carbonaceous shales, and coal seams.
