Driven (TV Series)
''Driven'' is a motoring television programme launched by Channel 4 in 1998 as a rival to the successful and long-running BBC series '' Top Gear''. It last aired new episodes in 2002. History The style was similar to its rival, but with additional features such as the "Driven 100", a road test of three cars in the same class, where each car would be given marks for qualities such as practicality, desirability and cost of ownership. The car with the highest total score would be the winner. The programme launched with the concept that the presenters should interact with each other rather than present items on their own, as was then the case on ''Top Gear''. The first series also featured a "headquarters", a racing team track, set on a former USAF base (Wethersfield, Essex) at which cars were put through their paces. Mike Brewer (television Presenter)
Mike Brewer (born 28 August 1964) is an English car trader-turned-presenter of Driving, motoring television programmes. He currently presents ''Wheeler Dealers'' on the Discovery Channel (UK and Ireland), Discovery Channel with Marc "Elvis" Priestley. Early life Brewer was born in 1964 in Lambeth, London, to Roger Wilks and Doreen Fitzgerald. His father Roger was the owner at one point of a Ford Popular called "Mr Popstar", and was heavily involved in vehicle customizing, which helped Brewer discover his passion for motoring. Brewer's first car was a beige Mini 850cc. Television career Brewer's television shows have included ''Driven (TV series), Driven'' on Channel 4, ''Deals on Wheels'', ''Pulling Power'', ''Wrecks to Riches'', ''Auto Trader (TV series), Auto Trader'', ''Wheeler Dealers'' and ''Wheeler Dealers Trading Up''. ''Top Gear'' is a British automotive magazine motoring-themed television programme. It is a Revival (television), revival of the Top Gear (1977 TV series), 1977–2001 show of the same name for the BBC, devised by Jeremy Clarkson and Andy Wilman, which premiered on 20 October 2002. The programme expanded upon its earlier incarnation which focused on reviewing cars to incorporate films featuring motoring-based challenges, races, timed laps of notable cars, and celebrity timed laps on a specially designed track. The programme drew acclaim for its visual and presentation style, as well as Top Gear controversies, criticism over the controversial nature of some content. The show was also praised for its humour and lore existing in not just the automotive community but in the form of internet memes and jokes. Driving In The United Kingdom
Driving in the United Kingdom is governed by various legal powers and in some cases is subject to the passing of a driving test. The government produces a Highway Code that details the requirements for all road users, including drivers. Unlike most other countries in the world, UK traffic drives on the left. Speed limits British roads are limited for most vehicles by the National Speed Limit. Road signs in the UK use imperial units, so speed limits are posted in miles per hour. Speed limits are the maximum speed at which certain drivers may legally drive on a road rather than a defined appropriate speed, and in some cases the nature of a road may dictate that one should drive significantly more slowly than the speed limit may allow. Channel 4 Programming
Channel 4 is a British free-to-air public broadcast television channel owned and operated by Channel Four Television Corporation. It is publicly owned but, unlike the BBC, it receives no public funding and is funded entirely by its commercial activities, including advertising. It began its transmission in 1982 and was established to provide a fourth television service in the United Kingdom. At the time, the only other channels were the licence-funded BBC1 and BBC2, and a single commercial broadcasting network, ITV. ''Pulling Power'' is a regional motoring programme shown only on Central Television (ITV in the Midlands) in 1996. However, it returned in 2005 and was shown on ITV1 on a series trial basis until 2008, and it was also as a filler programme at times. It has also been shown on ITV4.
