Drive-through
A drive-through or drive-thru (a sensational spelling of the word through), is a type of take-out service provided by a business that allows customers to purchase products (or use the service provided by the business) without leaving their cars. The format was pioneered in the United States in the 1930s, and has since spread to other countries. Drive-through facilities typically come in one of three forms. 1. Single lane, where the agent is in the kiosk on the driver's side; 2. Dual lane, with the left lane on the left side of the kiosk facing the right side of the vehicle, and the right lane on the right side of the kiosk, facing the left side of the vehicle, with either an agent for each lane or a single agent handling both lanes; and 3. multilane, with two or more lanes all with an agent on the driver's side of the vehicle. A take-out (US, Canada, Philippines) or takeaway (UK, Ireland, Commonwealth) is a prepared meal or other food items purchased at a restaurant or fast food outlet with the intent to eat elsewhere. A drive-in is a facility (such as a restaurant or Drive-in theater, movie theater) where one can driving, drive in with an automobile for service. At a drive-in restaurant, for example, customers park their vehicles and are usually served by staff who walk or rollerskate out to take orders and return with food, encouraging diners to remain parked while they eat. Drive-in theaters have a large screen and a car parking area for film-goers. It is usually distinguished from a drive-through, in which drivers line up to make an order at a microphone set up at window height, and then drive to a window where they pay and receive their food. Red's Giant Hamburg
Red's Giant Hamburg was a restaurant on U.S. Route 66 in Springfield, Missouri, which is believed to have been the world's first drive-through restaurant. It was reopened in 2019 in a different location. Overview Sheldon "Red" Chaney (May 20, 1916 – June 2, 1997) arrived in Springfield after World War II with a bride and a business degree. He purchased a small Sinclair gas station with several wooden motor court cabins tucked among trees on the back of the property. Eventually, a café was added in 1947. Growing weary of pumping gasoline, gas and operating the motor court, the couple decided a better money-maker would be a restaurant. A carhop is a waiter or waitress who brings fast food to people in their cars at drive-in restaurants. Carhops usually work on foot but sometimes use roller skates, as depicted in movies such as ''American Graffiti'' and television shows such as ''Happy Days''. Carhops have long been associated with hot rods and 1950s pop culture. The first carhops appeared in 1921 when automobiles were beginning to be a common sight in Dallas, Texas. Two men, a businessman named J.G. Kirby and a physician named R.W. Jackson, decided to take advantage of the fact that many people owned cars and more were coming.
