Driezum
Driezum () is a village in the Dantumadiel municipality of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 850 in 2017. Together with Wâlterswâld it forms the twin village of Driezum-Wâlterswâld. The residential center of Driezum and the southern residential center of Wâlterswâld form a unit. The two villages have many common associations and a common village community centre, which is located in Wâlterswâld. On the eastern side of Driezum lies the hamlet Eastwâld. Wâlterswâld
Wâlterswâld () is a village in Dantumadiel municipality, Friesland, the Netherlands. The village had a population of approximately 920 in 2017. The village as two residential centers, a northern and southern center. The southern center forms a unit with the residential center of the village Driezum. Therefore together with Driezum it forms the twin village of Driezum-Wâlterswâld. The two villages have many common associations and a common village community centre, called De Nije Warf and which is located in Wâlterswâld. History The place was probably founded on the artificial dwelling mound, an so called terp called ''Walthiem'' and which was located southeast of Dokkum and north of the modern village of Wâlterswâld. Dantumadiel
Dantumadiel () is a List of municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality in the Provinces of the Netherlands, province of Friesland in the Netherlands. Dantumadiel is a rural municipality characterized by economic activity and agriculture. History The first time Dantumadiel is mentioned was in a document from 1242. At that time Dantumadiel, or ''Donthmadeil'' as it was then known, was a part of the Winninghe district, the northern part of Oostergo. The grietenij (municipality) Dantumadiel was led by a grietman (mayor) who was holding office in Rinsumageast and Dantumawâld. Eastwâld
Eastwâld () is a hamlet in the municipality of Dantumadiel in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It is located to the east of Driezum, with habitation on both sides of the Strobosser Trekfeart. On the east side, it passes into the hamlet of Keatlingwier. On the west side lies the Rinsma State, which was an important stately house and served as the town hall of Dantumadiel from 1971 until 1999. The Driezumer Bos is a wood situated around the state, and on the southern grounds of the hamlet lies the recreation and nature area Rinsma pôlle. This area was the former Petsleat / Swemmer dredging depot, used between 1972 and 1985. History The place was first mentioned in 1543 as ''Oestwoldt''. Damwâld
Damwâld is a village in the Dantumadiel municipality of Friesland, in the Netherlands. In 2020 it had 5630 citizens. This number of citizens makes Damwâld the largest village in the municipality of Dantumadiel. History The present day village of Damwâld is a merged place of three older villages, merged in 1971. The three villages were; Dantumawoude ''(Dantumawâld)'', Akkerwoude ''(Ikkerwâld)'' and Murmerwoude ''(Moarrewâld)''. But it was in the 19th century that the villages started really growing together already. From the second half of that century the buildings strongly densified and in 1880 along the Murmerlaan (later named the Haadwei) the first tram track of Friesland was opened, a horse track. Terp
A ''terp'', also known as a ''wierde, woerd, warf, warft, werf, werve, wurt'' or ''værft'', is an artificial dwelling mound found on the North European Plain that has been created to provide safe ground during storm surges, high tides and sea or river flooding. The various terms used reflect the regional dialects of the North European region. These mounds occur in the coastal parts of the Netherlands (in the provinces of Zeeland, Friesland and Groningen (province), Groningen), in southern parts of Denmark and in the north-western parts of Germany where, before Dyke (construction), dykes were made, floodwater interfered with daily life. Stins
A stins (Dutch, pl. ''stinsen''; from West Frisian ''stienhûs'' utch ''steenhuis''"stone house", shortened to ''stins'', pl. ''stinzen'') is a former stronghold or villa in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. Many stinsen carry the name "''state''" (related to English 'estate'). A ''stins'' and the surrounding ''state'' used to belong to a permanent group of '' hoofdelingen/heerschapen'', which were prominent, rich land-owning citizens. From the 1300's, these noblemen had their bases of power in the cities or large villages, their families owned a few hundred hectares of fertile farmland divided over several dozen tenanted farms. The noblemen married one another as much as possible, on a material and culturally equal level, in order to prevent the loss of property and honour by inheritance.
