Drax Priory
Drax Priory was an Augustinian priory at Drax in North Yorkshire, England England is a Countries of the United Kingdom, country that is part of the United Kingdom. It ..., founded between 1130 and 1139 by William Paynel. The Priory has sometimes been called an abbey, though this is judged to be incorrect. Permission was given to crenellate the priory in 1362. The Priory was run down in 1535 with the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the land was leased to Sir Marmaduke Constable to be used as a farm. In 1997, a geophysical survey and aerial imaging was undertaken which revealed wall lines of buried buildings and former ponds. The monks at Drax owned lands in Ryecroft and St Ives (both near Bingley) in what is now West Yorkshire. These lands were granted to the monks by Adam De Birkin between 1165 and 1185. References ... Drax, North Yorkshire
Drax is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, about south-east of Selby, which is best known today as the site of Drax power station. It was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1 April 1974. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the district of Selby, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council. The Read School, an independent boarding school in the village, has existed since 1667. History St Peter and St Paul's Church, Drax, is the parish church. In the reign of King Henry I (1100–1135) William Paynel founded a priory of Augustinian Canons at Drax. In 1868 it was reported that traces of the priory could still be found but fieldwork in the 1980s and 1990s has failed to find any physical remains of it. By the mid-13th century, Drax was a borough of local significance. William Paynel
William Paynel (sometimes William Paganel;Keats-Rohan ''Domesday Descendants'' pp. 1057–1058 died around 1146) was an Anglo-Norman nobleman and baron. Son of a Domesday landholder, William inherited his father's lands in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and Normandy after the death of an older brother during their father's lifetime. After the death of King Henry I of England, Paynel supported Henry's daughter Matilda in her attempts to take the throne from her cousin Stephen, who had seized it. Matilda entrusted Nottingham Castle to Paynel's custody, although he lost it within two years when it was captured by a supporter of Stephen's. Paynel also founded two religious houses - one in England and one in Normandy. After Paynel's death around 1146, his lands were split between two sons. Sir Marmaduke Constable (c. 1480 – 14 September 1545), of Everingham, Yorkshire, was an English soldier and Member of Parliament. He was the great-grandfather of the poet, Henry Constable, author of ''Diana'', one of the first sonnet sequences in English. Family The family takes its name from the office of constable of Chester, to which Hugh d'Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester, appointed his kinsman, Nigel, Baron of Halton, at the time of William the Conqueror.
