Drass (company)
Drass, or DRASS, is an Italian manufacturing company headquartered in Livorno, whose best known for their range of midget submarine and swimmer delivery vehicle. The company also has a line of hyperbaric chambers for diver decompression. Work is done at Livorno and also Ghiroda, Romania. History Beginnings The beginnings of the company date to 1927 when Roberto Galeazzi patented a hydrostatic pressure-resistant submarine hull. The patent was then approved by the ''Regia Marina'' which led to Galeazzi designing hulls for the Calvi-class submarines in the 1930s. Based on the 1927 patent, Galeazzi attempted to design a submarine himself and by 1929 he submitted his specifications for the "Great Oceanic Colonial Submarine" to the Italian Navy. The submarine had a weight of , a length of and was to be capable of speeds of when immersed and on the surface. The armament consisted of twin turrets of guns, and eight torpedo tubes. Dras (also spelt Drass, ISO transliteration: '), also known locally in Shina as Himababs, Hembabs, or Humas, is a town and hill station in Kargil district of the union territory of Ladakh in India. It is on the NH 1 between Zoji La pass and Kargil town. A tourist hub for its high-altitude trekking routes and tourist sites, it is often called "The Gateway to Ladakh". The government's official spelling of the town's name is "Drass". Etymology Traditionally, Dras is known as ''Hem-babs'', which means "snow land"; the word "Hem" means snow. Drass River
The Dras River, also spelt Drass River, is a river in the Kargil district in the Indian union territory of Ladakh. It originates below the Zoji La pas in the Great Himalayan range and flows northeast towards Kargil, where it joins the Suru River. The Shingo River, which flows in a parallel direction in Pakistan-administered Baltistan, also joins the Dras River. The combined river is alternatively called Suru, Drass and Shingo by various local groups. The Dras River valley is traversed by the National Highway 1D that connects Srinagar in Kashmir with Leh in Ladakh. It represents a historic trade route. Course The Dras River is long and flows entirely in the Dras Valley.
