''Dragonquest'' is a science fantasy novel by the American-Irish author Anne McCaffrey. It is the sequel to '' Dragonflight'', set seven years later and the second book in the '' Dragonriders of Pern'' series. ''Dragonquest'' was first published by Ballantine Books in May 1971. Origins According to her son Todd, McCaffrey's agent Virginia Kidd and editor Betty Ballantine provided crucial advice and assistance in her struggle with the sequel to ''Dragonflight''. After the agent first read a draft, the author followed her advice to "burn it", and she met with the editor in long sessions. It was near completion before she emigrated to Ireland in September 1970, with her two younger children Todd and Georgeanne, one month after divorcing her husband. She finished it soon after the move. ''Dragonsong'' is a science fantasy novel by the American-Irish author Anne McCaffrey. Released by Atheneum Books in March 1976, it was the third to appear set on the world Pern of the ''Dragonriders of Pern''. In its time, however, ''Dragonsong'' brought the fictional planet Pern to a new publisher, editor, and target audience of young adults, and soon became the first book in the '' Harper Hall of Pern'' trilogy. The original ''Dragonriders of Pern'' trilogy with Ballantine Books was not completed until after the publication of ''Dragonsong'' and its sequel. Anne McCaffrey
Anne Inez McCaffrey (1 April 1926 – 21 November 2011) was an American-Irish writer known for the ''Dragonriders of Pern'' science fiction series. She was the first woman to win a Hugo Award for fiction (Best Novella, ''Weyr Search'', 1968) and the first to win a Nebula Award (Best Novella, ''Dragonrider'', 1969). Her 1978 novel '' The White Dragon'' became one of the first science-fiction books to appear on the ''New York Times'' Best Seller list. In 2005 the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America named McCaffrey its 22nd Grand Master, an annual award to living writers of fantasy and science fiction. She was inducted by the Science Fiction Hall of Fame on 17 June 2006. She also received the Robert A. Heinlein Award for her work in 2007. Virginia Kidd (June 2, 1921 – January 11, 2003) was an American literary agent, writer and editor, who worked in particular in science fiction and related fields. She represented science fiction American authors such as Ursula K. Le Guin, R.A. Lafferty, Anne McCaffrey, Judith Merril, and Gene Wolfe. Wolfe modeled Ann Schindler, a character in his 1990 novel ''Castleview'', in large part on Kidd. The Harper Hall trilogy is a series of three science fiction novels by the American-Irish author Anne McCaffrey.
