Drackett
The Drackett Company was a leading company in the specialty chemicals business during the 20th century, responsible for such products as Windex glass cleaner, Vanish toilet bowl cleaner, Drāno drain opener, Behold furniture polish, Endust dusting aid, Renuzit air freshener, Mr. Muscle oven cleaner, and Miracle White laundry products. They also produced the O-Cedar line of brooms, mops, sponges and scrubbers. Company beginnings Philip Drackett, born to a Cleveland shipbuilding family in 1856, decided to cut his own swath, apprenticing to a pharmacist while in school, and opening his own Cleveland drugstore upon his marriage. He was fascinated by chemicals, though and eventually sold the drugstore, becoming a sales representative for drug supply houses, first in Chattanooga, Tennessee, then in Cincinnati. Drano (styled as Drāno) is an American brand of chemical drain cleaner that is manufactured by S. C. Johnson & Son. Crystal Drano According to the National Institutes of Health's Household Products Database, the crystal form is composed of: * Sodium hydroxide (lye), NaOH * Sodium nitrate, NaNO3 * Sodium chloride (salt), NaCl * Aluminium shards, Al After Drano crystals are added to water, the reaction works as follows: # Aluminium reacts with lye: 2NaOH + 2Al + 2H2O → 3H2 + 2NaAlO2, although the exact species in solution may be NaAl(OH)4. Windex
Windex is an American brand of glass and hard-surface cleaner that was invented by the Drackett Company in 1933 and has been marketed throughout the intervening decades—originally in glass containers, later in plastic ones. Drackett sold the Windex brand to Bristol-Meyers in 1965. S. C. Johnson acquired Windex in 1993 and has been manufacturing it since. The original Windex was yellow. Endust
Endust is an American brand of dusting aid produced by Nakoma Products. A dusting aid is sprayed on a dustcloth or dustmop, rather than directly on the furniture. The brand was developed by O-Cedar, a division of Martin Marietta, in the 1950s; Drackett acquired O-Cedar from Martin Marietta in the 1960s. Originally, Endust consisted of odorless mineral spirits and 1,1,1-trichloroethane with a propellant blend of propane and isobutane. The Montreal Protocol targeted 1,1,1-trichloroethane as one of those compounds responsible for ozone depletion and banned its use beginning in 1996. Since then, the manufacture and use of 1,1,1-trichloroethane has been phased out throughout most of the world. Vanish (brand)
Vanish is an American brand of toilet bowl cleaner produced by S. C. Johnson in North America. They obtained the brand through the purchase of The Drackett Company in 1992. The Vanish name has since accompanied S. C. Johnson's Scrubbing Bubbles brand as a sub-brand. History Drackett purchased the product from inventor Judson Dunaway of Dover, New Hampshire, who introduced Vanish in 1937 as a competitor to Sani-Flush, a toilet bowl cleaner made since 1911. The products were substantially the same. The active ingredient in crystal bowl cleaners is sodium bisulfate (also known as sodium hydrogen sulfate). Surfactants are added. The last Sani-Flush patent had expired in 1932. Most other household cleaners are basic (alkaline) in nature. Renuzit
Renuzit is an American brand of air fresheners produced by Henkel North American Consumer Goods. The Renuzit brand once included a solvent-based spot remover and cleaner as well. History Renuzit cleaning fluid was originally produced by the Radbill Oil Co. of Philadelphia in 1932, which became Renuzit Home Products Company before 1947. The company was acquired by Drackett in 1969, which had been bought by Bristol-Myers in 1965, which in turn, merged with Squibb in 1989. In 1992, Bristol-Myers Squibb sold Drackett to S. C. Behold
Behold is an American brand of furniture polish produced by Nakoma Products, LLC. Behold furniture polish and Endust dusting aid were previously produced by Sara Lee. When Drackett was sold to S. C. Johnson & Son in 1992, these two products, Endust and Behold, were sold to Sara Lee. In 2010 the product lines Endust and Behold were sold to Nakoma Products LLC. Located in Coal City, Illinois.
