Dovre Church
Dovre Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Dovre Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. It is located in the village of Dovre. It is the church for the Dovre parish which is part of the Nord-Gudbrandsdal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Hamar. The slate-clad, wooden church was built in an cruciform design in 1736 using plans drawn up by the architect Jesper Rusten. The church seats about 250 people. History The first church in Dovre was a wooden stave church that was likely built around the year 1250. Oral tradition said that King Haakon Haakonsen had the small church built there. The farm area on which it was built was a royal farm that was mentioned in old writings by the historian Snorri Sturluson who wrote that King Harald Hårfagre had a Christmas party at this site. The village is located along the Gudbrandsdalslågen river in the upper Gudbrandsdal valley about southeast of the village of Dombås and about northwest of the town of Otta. Snøhetta is the highest mountain in the Dovrefjell mountain range in Norway. At , it is the highest mountain in Norway outside the Jotunheimen range, making it the 24th highest peak in Norway, based on a topographic prominence cutoff. Dombås
is a village or small town in Dovre Municipality in northern Innlandet county, Norway. The village serves as the commercial centre for the upper Gudbrandsdalen valley. It lies at an important junction of roads with the European route E6 highway heading north and south connecting the cities of Oslo and Trondheim and the European route E136 highway heading west to Åndalsnes. The Dovrebanen and Raumabanen railway lines meet in the village at Dombås Station as well. Dombås Church is located in the village. Hjerkinn
Hjerkinn is a village in Dovre Municipality in Innlandet county in Norway. The village is located in the Dovrefjell mountains, about northeast of the village of Dombås and about northwest of the village of Folldal. It is one of the driest places in the country, with only annual precipitation in the 10-year period 1905-14. The railway station Hjerkinn Station is located on the Dovre Line, at an elevation of above mean sea level. The European route E6 highway also passes through the village. Until 1993 there was mining in the village by Folldal Gruver. The Norwegian military also has a camp at Hjerkinn. Gudbrandsdal
Gudbrandsdalen (; ) is a valley and traditional district in the Norwegian county of Innlandet (formerly Oppland). The valley is oriented in a north-westerly direction from Lillehammer and the lake of Mjøsa, extending toward the Romsdalen valley. The river Gudbrandsdalslågen (Lågen) flows through the valley, starting from the lake Lesjaskogsvatnet and ending at the lake Mjøsa. The Otta river which flows through Otta valley is a major tributary to the main river Lågen. The valleys of the tributary rivers such as Otta and Gausa (Gausdal) are usually regarded as part of Gudbrandsdalen. The total area of the valley is calculated from the areas of the related municipalities. Gudbrandsdalen is the main valley in a web of smaller valleys.
