History Doutta Stars began playing football at Buckley Park in West Essendon in 1946 and consisted mainly of returned soldiers looking for sporting opportunities. The team developed a sense of tradition that has formulated its successes on, and continues to play at this ground today. Buckley Park is also the home for the cricket team since 1967 and the bowling and tennis clubs. Essendon District Football League
The Essendon District Football League (EDFL) is a professional Australian rules football league competition based in Essendon, Victoria, consisting of teams based in the north-west suburbs of Melbourne. Founded in 1930, the men's competition consists of three leagues: Premier Division, Division 1 and Division 2, with 10 clubs in the Premier Division and Division 1 nine in Division 2. Promotion and relegation between these divisions occurs, with the lowest-placed clubs in the Premier Division and Division 1 being relegated at the end of each season. Clubs which win the Division 1 and Division 2 premierships are automatically promoted. Each men's team also fields a reserves side and an under-19 side that play a fixture mirroring that of the senior side. Since 2017, the League has also run a competition for women's Australian rules football. Essendon is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north-west of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Moonee Valley local government area. Essendon recorded a population of 21,240 at the 2021 census. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind").
