Douglas Lumsden
Douglas Aaron Lumsden (born 31 August 1971) is a Scottish Conservative Party politician. He has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the North East Scotland region since the election in May 2021. He was previously the co-leader of Aberdeen City Council. Early life and education Douglas was born in Aberdeen in 1971 to parents Douglas and June Lumsden. The younger Douglas was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Robert Gordon University, where he studied Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Career Lumsden worked in the IT industry from 1993 to 2017. It was in 2017 that he was first elected to Aberdeen City Council, as one of three councillors representing the Airyhall/Broomhill/Garthdee ward. He was co-leader of the council from 2017 until 2021. Lumsden contested the Aberdeen South seat at the 2019 United Kingdom general election and came second. 2022 Aberdeen City Council Election
Elections to Aberdeen City Council took place on 5 May 2022 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. As with other Scottish council elections, it was held using single transferable vote (STV) – a form of proportional representation – in which multiple candidates are elected in each ward and voters rank candidates in order of preference. For the second consecutive election, the Scottish National Party (SNP) were returned as the largest party on the council, increasing their number by one to 20 councillors out of 45. Labour – standing under the Aberdeen Labour moniker – regained some of the ground it had lost at the previous election to overtake the Conservatives for second place with 11 councillors (up two), while the Conservatives lost three seats to return eight councillors. Partygate was a political scandal in the United Kingdom about parties and other gatherings of government and Conservative Party staff held during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, when public health restrictions prohibited most gatherings. While several lockdowns in the country were in place, gatherings took place at 10 Downing Street, its garden, and other government buildings. Reports of events attracted media attention, public backlash and political controversy. In late January 2022, twelve gatherings came under investigation by the Metropolitan Police, including at least three attended by Boris Johnson, the then-Prime Minister. The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) is the national association of Scottish councils and acts as an employers' association for its 32 member authorities. History Formed in 1975, COSLA exists to promote and protect the interests of the country's councils by providing a forum for discussion of matters of common concern. COSLA ascertains the views of member councils and communicates these to central government, other bodies and the public. It is the successor to the Convention of Royal Burghs, an organisation which dated back to the 12th Century, but was dissolved after the local government changes of the 1970s.
