Douglas Lewis (boxer)
Douglas Lewis (August 6, 1898 – February 19, 1981) was a welterweight professional boxer from Canada, who competed in the 1920s. Lewis trained out of Toronto's Praestamus Athletic Club, where Larry Gains also trained. He won the bronze medal in Boxing at the 1924 Summer Olympics in the welterweight division, losing against Jean Delarge in the semi-finals. He was born in Toronto, Ontario. Boxing At The Summer Olympics
Boxing has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since its introduction to the program at the 1904 Summer Olympics, except for the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, because Swedish law banned the sport at the time. The 2008 Summer Olympics were the final games with boxing as a male only event. Since the 2012 Summer Olympics, women's boxing is part of the program. Welterweight is a weight class in combat sports. Originally the term "welterweight" was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like Muay Thai, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts also use it for their own weight division system to classify the opponents. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight.
