Doug Widell
Douglas Joseph Widell (born September 23, 1966) is an American former professional football player who was a guard for nine seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Boston College Eagles and was selected by the Denver Broncos in the second round of the 1989 NFL draft. He was a part of the Broncos' Super Bowl XXIV losing team. In American football, a guard (G), otherwise known as an offensive guard (OG), is an Lineman (gridiron football), offensive line player who lines up between the center (American football), center and the offensive tackle, tackles. Like other offensive line positions, guards are used primarily for Blocking (American football), blocking. Right guards (RG) is the term for the guards on the right of the offensive line, while left guards (LG) are on the left side. Notable guards in the National Football League include Chris Lindstrom (Atlanta Falcons), Quentin Nelson (Indianapolis Colts), and Joe Thuney (Chicago Bears). 1989 NFL Draft
The 1989 NFL draft (also known as the NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting) was the procedure by which National Football League teams selected amateur college football players. The draft was held April 23–24, 1989, at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, New York. The league also held a supplemental draft after the regular draft and before the regular season. Four of the first five players selected in the draft – quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Barry Sanders, linebacker Derrick Thomas, and cornerback Deion Sanders – would be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. David Harold Widell, Jr. (born May 14, 1965) is an American former professional football guard and tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Atlanta Falcons. He played college football at Boston College. Early life Widell attended South Catholic High School in Connecticut, where he originally played the trombone in the school band. In football, he played at tight end and nose tackle. He didn't start until his junior season. He received All-state honors at both positions as a senior.
