Doug Mathews
Doug Mathews is an American jazz electric bassist, double bassist, and bass clarinetist best known for being a former member of multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers' trio. Career Mathews became a member of Rivers' trio in 1993, two years after Rivers moved from New York to Florida, along with drummer Anthony Cole. The trio recorded three albums together: ''Firestorm'' (1998), '' Concept'' (1997), ''Caldera'' (2022). On the albums ''Concept'' and ''Caldera'', Mathews played his second instrument, the bass clarinet, in order to form a woodwind trio with Cole on saxophone. Free jazz critic John Sharpe praised the group's collaboration, noting that Mathews' "bowing segues into a spirited conversation between Rivers' soprano wail and Cole's intertwining tenor". Bassist
A bassist (also known as a bass player or bass guitarist) is a musician who plays a bass instrument such as a double bass (upright bass, contrabass, wood bass), bass guitar (electric bass, acoustic bass), synthbass, keyboard bass or a low brass instrument such as a tuba or trombone. Different musical genres tend to be associated with one or more of these instruments. Since the 1960s, the electric bass has been the standard bass instrument for funk, R&B, soul music, rock and roll, reggae, jazz fusion, heavy metal, country and pop music. Fluid Motion (album)
''Fluid Motion'' is a live album by the jazz ensemble of the same name. Led by trombonist and composer David Manson, and featuring guest artist Sam Rivers on saxophone, it was recorded on January 3, 2002, at Springs Theatre in Tampa, Florida, and was released later that year by Isospin Labs. On the album, Manson and Rivers are joined by trumpeter Jonathan Powell, plus double bassist Doug Mathews and drummer Anthony Cole, both of whom were regular members of Rivers's trio. Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA) is a nonprofit, interdisciplinary artists’ community and arts education facility providing artists an opportunity to work and collaborate with contemporary artists in the fields of composing, visual, literary, and performing arts. Mary Halvorson
Mary Halvorson (born October 16, 1980) is an American avant-garde jazz composer and guitarist from Brookline, Massachusetts. Among her many collaborations, she has: led a trio with and Ches Smith, and a quintet with the addition of Jon Irabagon and Jonathan Finlayson; recorded duo albums with violist Jessica Pavone; and recorded several albums with bassist Michael Formanek and drummer under the band name Thumbscrew. In 2017, 2018, and 2019 Halvorson won Best Guitar in '' DownBeat's'' International Critics Poll. In 2019, she was awarded a MacArthur "Genius" Grant for music. Frank Messina
Frank Messina (born ) is an American poet, author and performance artist. Among his four published works, Messina is the author of ''Full Count: The Book of Mets Poetry'', a 2009 work that focused on baseball fanaticism. His 2002 book, ''Disorderly Conduct'', focused on reactions to the September 11 terrorist attacks and is based on his experience as a volunteer for three days at Liberty State Park assisting rescue workers at Ground Zero. Jean-Louis Lebris de Kérouac (; March 12, 1922 – October 21, 1969), known as Jack Kerouac, was an American novelist and poet who, alongside William S. Bass Clarinet
The bass clarinet is a musical instrument of the clarinet family. Like the more common soprano B clarinet, it is usually pitched in B (meaning it is a transposing instrument on which a written C sounds as B), but it plays notes an octave below the soprano B clarinet. Bass clarinets in other keys, notably C and A, also exist, but are very rare (in contrast to the regular A clarinet, which is quite common in classical music). Bass clarinets regularly perform in orchestras, wind ensembles and concert bands, and occasionally in marching bands, and play an occasional solo role in contemporary music and jazz in particular. Barry Altschul
Barry Altschul (born January 6, 1943, New York City) is a free jazz and hard bop drummer who first came to notice in the late 1960s for performing with pianists Paul Bley and Chick Corea. Biography Altschul is of Russian Jewish heritage, the son of a laborer who did construction work and drove a taxi. Having initially taught himself to play drums, Altschul studied with Charlie Persip during the 1960s. In the latter part of the decade, he performed with Paul Bley. In 1969 he joined with Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Anthony Braxton to form the group Circle. At the time, he made use of a high-pitched Gretsch kit with add-on drums and percussion instruments.
