Double Your Money
''Double Your Money'' was a British game show hosted by Hughie Green. Originally broadcast on Radio Luxembourg since 1950 and based on the American radio quiz '' Take It Or Leave It'' (1940–1947), it transferred to ITV in September 1955, a few days after the commercial channel began broadcasting. It was produced by Associated-Rediffusion until 1964 and then by Rediffusion London and it finished in 1968 when the company lost its franchise. Throughout its run the show was one of the most consistently popular programmes on British television. The quiz format was similar to ''The $64,000 Question'', with prize money doubling at each question from £1 to a guarantee of £32 and multi-part answers being required at the harder stages. When contestants correctly answer a three-part question to reach the £1,000 ''Treasure Trail'', they were placed in sound-proofed 'isolation booths', where the fans were turned off and the temperature grew, making contestants sweat and look nervous. ... ''The Sky's the Limit'' was a United Kingdom game show first broadcast on 11 July 1970, being a travel-themed version of '' Double Your Money''. Background The show was hosted by Hughie Green and co-hosted by Monica Rose, Audrey Graham and Katya Wyeth. The contestants had to answer questions based on their specialist subject, with every set of answers increasing their prize fund. In the first round, contestants answered questions increasing in value from £1 up to £100 (). They then had to answer a special question to qualify for the further rounds. Further rounds involved contestants being seated in a 'soundproof box'. After the first round questions contained subsequently more parts, so that on the final round the question was a five-part question - all parts had to be answered correctly in each round. White City is a district of London, England, in the northern part of Shepherd's Bush in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, 5 miles (8 km) west-northwest of Charing Cross. Monica Angela Rose (11 February 1948 – 2 February 1994) was a British TV quiz show hostess, who appeared on '' Double Your Money'' and '' The Sky's the Limit'', both presented by Hughie Green. Rose was known for her Cockney accent, a novelty among TV presenters of the time. Biography and showbusiness career Rose was born in White City, London in 1948. Her father was a London Underground train driver and her mother a cleaner at White City Stadium. In 1963, at the age of just 15, whilst working as a young accounts clerk, she was given tickets for a recording of the Hughie Green quiz show called ''Double Your Money''. The show offered a choice of 42 subjects and offered £1 for the answer to a question given by the host with the chance to double their money from £1 up to a maximum of £32.
