Dory (boat)
A dory is a small, shallow-draft (hull), draft boat, about long. It is usually a lightweight boat with high sides, a flat bottom and sharp bows. It is easy to build because of its simple lines. For centuries, the dory has been used as a traditional fishing boat, both in coastal waters and in the open sea. The term 'dory' is attested in 1700-10 in American English, and possibly derived from Miskito language, Miskito dóri or dúri, a canoe or small round-bottomed boat, chiefly used in Central America and the Caribbean. Definition Strictly speaking, the only true defining characteristic of the dory is that it is planked with wide straight boards running fore-and-aft; "It should be well understood, that it is the dory's special mode of construction, not its hull shape, that sets it, and its related sub-types apart from other boats".Gardner, page 15. More generally speaking, the dory can be defined as a small boat which has: * a flat bottom, with the bottom planks fastened lengthw ... Dory Nunatak
Benson Glacier () is a glacier about long, draining the east part of Flight Deck Névé and continuing east between Fry Glacier and Mackay Glacier into the north part of Granite Harbour where it forms a floating tongue. Exploration and naming Benson Glacier was mapped in 1957 by the New Zealand Northern Survey Party of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1956–1958), and indicated as a somewhat longer glacier including the present Midship Glacier. It was named by the party after Noel Benson, formerly professor of geology at the University of Otago, New Zealand, whose publications include a major contribution to the petrology of Victoria Land. Location The Benson Glacier forms in the northeast end of Alatna Valley in the Convoy Range and flows northeast to the south of Mount Razorback, Dotson Ridge, Flagship Mountain, Mount Davidson (Antarctica) and Mount Nesbelan, which surround Flight Deck Névé. Dory Rips
The Dory Rips is a phenomenon involving extreme tide, tidal agitation of waters located in the Bay of Fundy off the headland of Cape d'Or in Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia, Canada. The phenomenon occurs at the entrance to the Minas Basin, which is known for the globe's highest tides. The turbulence does not result from a simple rip tide, but rather from the collision of three opposed tidal currents whose violence is enhanced by the presence of a subsurface reef that forces the water upward. The powerful incoming tidal current loops back and collides with itself while another current, coursing in semicircular fashion around Advocate Bay, slams into the collision point at a 90-degree angle. Marine Hazard To warn mariners away from the Dory Rips, a foghorn was placed at Cape d'Or in 1875 and a lighthouse, which is still operational, was established in 1922. Google Moderator
Google Moderator was a Google service that used crowdsourcing to rank user-submitted questions, suggestions and ideas. It was launched on September 25, 2008 and shut down on June 30, 2015. The service allowed the management of feedback from a large number of people, who could vote for questions they thought should be posed from a pool of questions submitted by others or submit their own to be asked and voted on. The service aimed to ensure that every question was considered, let the audience see others' questions, and helped the moderator of a team or event address the questions that the audience most cared about. The service was internally nicknamed Dory at Google, a reference to "the fish who asked questions all the time in ''Finding Nemo''"''.'' Google Moderator was developed by Google engineers Dave S. Young, Taliver Heath, and Colby Ranger in their 20% time, led by project manager Katie Jacobs Stanton. In December 2008, Google Moderator was used by the President-elect Barac ... Dory (spear)
The dory or ''doru '' (; ) was the chief spear of hoplites (heavy infantry) in Ancient Greece. The word ''doru'' is first attested in the Homeric epics with the meanings of "wood" and "spear". Homeric heroes hold two (, plural of ) (Il. 11,43, Od. 1, 256). In classical antiquity, the dory was a symbol of military power, possibly more important than the sword, as can be inferred from expressions like "Troy conquered by dory" (Il. 16,708) and words like " () (spear-won) and " () (spear-taken). The spear used by the Persian army under Darius I and Xerxes in their respective campaigns during the Greco-Persian Wars was shorter than that of their Greek opponents. The ''dory''s length enabled multiple ranks of a formation to engage simultaneously during combat. The ''dory'' was not intended for throwing, such as a dart or javelin. However, its aerodynamic shape allowed the dory to be thrown. Because it had evolved for combat between phalanges (the plural form of ''phalanx''), it wa ... Mangup
__NOTOC__ Mangup (, , ) also known as ''Mangup Kale'' (''kale'' means "fortress" in Turkish) is a historic fortress in Crimea, located on a plateau about 13 kilometres east of Sevastopol (ancient Chersonesus). Names It was known as Dory (), later Doros (), Doras () and finally Theodoro () by the Byzantines, before being given the Kipchak name Mangup. A 14th-century inscription found in the city called it the "God-guarded fortress of Theodoro" and its citizens Theodorites. Genoese documents referred to the city as Tedoro, Todoro, Theodori, Teodori, Thodori, Tedori, and Todori. These names are derived from the Greek names of the place. The name Theodoro has survived up to the present day in the name of the village of Ai-Todor (Saint Theodore), which lies south of Mangup. Silvio Giuseppe Mercati believed that the plural form of the city's name (Theodori, Teodori, Thodori, Tedori, Todori) was because the city was dedicated to the two saints, Theodore Tiron and Theodore Stratel ...
