Dorothy Gladys Spicer
Dorothy Gladys Spicer (November 3, 1893 – January 25, 1975), also known as Gladys Spicer Fraser, was an American folklorist and writer. Early life and education Spicer was born in Staten Island, New York, the daughter of Jacob Lindley Spicer and Phoebe Bryan Washburn Spicer. Her father was a Quaker field secretary and police chaplin, and her mother was a registered nurse. She graduated from Vassar College in 1916. She earned a master's degree from Radcliffe College. Career Spicer was on the staff of the national board of the YWCA. In 1943, she was named nationality communities secretary of the YWCA, responsible for outreach to immigrant groups. She organized classes about American cookery and gave presentations to community groups about ethnic customs and celebrations, based on her research and travels in Europe. She was art adviser to the Utica Festival of Arts and Crafts in 1938, and advised the New Jersey State Museum on an exhibit of Latin American arts and crafts. S ... Dorothy Spicer
Dorothy Norman Pearse née Spicer (1908–1946) was an English aviatrix, and the first woman to gain an advanced qualification in aeronautical engineering. Early life Dorothy Spicer was born on 31 July 1908 at Hadley Wood, Middlesex, the only daughter of Hilda Mary Sisterson and stockbroker Norman Spicer (d. 1936). She attended the Godolphin School in Sailsbury, Wiltshire and studied at University College, London. Career Spicer learned to fly in 1929 at the London Aeroplane Club at Stag Lane Aerodrome. Here she met Pauline Gower who was studying for her commercial pilot's licence and who became her friend. In 1931, they started a business together. Gower was licensed to carry passengers for 'hire or reward', and Spicer was qualified as a ground engineer and held an 'A' (private) pilot's licence. The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) is a nonprofit organization with a focus on empowerment, leadership, and rights of women, young women, and girls in more than 100 countries. The World office is currently based in Geneva, Switzerland, and the nonprofit is headquartered in Washington, DC. Alice Wadowski-Bak
Alice T. Wadowski-Bak (August 8, 1935 – June 14, 2008) was a noted Polish-American artist and creator of wycinanki (paper-cutting). Her most famous work is Wigilia, which has been the cover art of Oplatek sold across the U.S. Ms. Wadowski-Bak's work has been exhibited at the Albright Knox in Buffalo, the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Life Trained in Buffalo NY, Alice's art caught the eye of Buffalo Society of Artists president, Polish Arts Club of Buffalo founder and esteemed artist Eugene Dyczkowski.
