Dorman Island
Dorman Island is an island in the Johnstone Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada, between West and East Cracroft Islands on the north side of the isthmus that joins them at low tide. Until 1940, with Farquharson Island, it was one of a group called the Double Islands; they were renamed to avoid duplication of the name elsewhere. Name origin Dorman Island was named for J.G. (Jack) "Johnny Bones" Dorman, who surveyed, built and operated the Bones Bay cannery until the 1954 when it closed down. He was born October 17, 1889, at Port Greville, Nova Scotia, working there for the Wallace Fish Company (which became the New England Fish Company, later renamed the Canadian Fishing Company). He came out to Vancouver with his family around 1910 and worked at the Kildonan and Uchucklesit canneries near Alberni Inlet. Minstrel Island
Minstrel Island, is an island in the Johnstone Strait region of the British Columbia Coast, Central Coast region of British Columbia, Canada. It is near the entrance to Knight Inlet just east of Turnour Island at the junction of Clio Channel, Clio and Chatham Channels. The island is separated on its south from East Cracroft Island by a marine passageway called The Blow Hole. There is a government dock at the southeast side of the island bordering Chatham Channel. The community of Minstrel Island is located on the east side of the island. The island has a floatplane base, Minstrel Island Water Aerodrome. Name origin The name is believed to have derived from a visit by a boat, believed to be , carrying Lord Dufferin, then Governor-General of Canada, and his wife which carried the viceregal couple on a voyage up the coast to Metlakatla, British Columbia, Metlakatla in 1876. Dorman is a surname, derived from the Middle English word ''dere'', or ''deor'', meant "wild animal". Therefore, Dorman translates as "wild animal", or, perhaps, "wild animal-man". Shushartie
Shushartie is a ghost town on the east shore of Shushartie Bay near the northeastern extremity of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Name origin The settlement adopted the name of the bay, which the Hudson's Bay Company conferred in 1838, while trading with First Nations. The name is an adaptation of a Kwakwaka'wakw word meaning "place possessing cockles". Shellfish abound on the extensive tidal flat at the head of the bay. In 1894, Rev. William Washington Bolton led an expedition from near Shushartie, across the northern parts to Quatsino Sound, and then south to Great Central Lake. Wales Island is an island on the North Coast of British Columbia, Canada, situated east of the Dixon Entrance at the entrance to Portland Inlet. in area, Wales Island is north of the port city of Prince Rupert, and south-east of Ketchikan, Alaska. Wales Island is bounded on the north by the Pearse Canal and Wales Passage, and by Tongass Passage and Portland Inlet to the south. Alberni Inlet
Alberni Inlet (formerly known as Alberni Canal) is a long, narrow inlet in Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, that stretches from the Pacific Ocean at Barkley Sound about inland terminating at Port Alberni. It was named by the Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza after Pedro de Alberní y Teixidor, Captain of the Free Company of Volunteers of Catalonia who was appointed in the Spanish fort in Nootka Sound from 1790 to 1792. The inlet includes traditional territories of the Ucluelet, Uchucklesaht, Huu-ay-aht, Hupacasath, and Tseshaht peoples, who are part of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council people. Bones Bay
Bones Bay is located inside the territorial properties of the Namgiis Indigenous Peoples on a bay the north side of West Cracroft Island in the Johnstone Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada, on Clio Channel. It is historically important for serving as a quarantine refuge in response to the illegal expulsion of smallpox infected persons, all Indigenous citizens from Fort Victoria during the introduced smallpox plague of 1862. The Naamgiis People prepared this quarantine site for 25 Haida canoes that had been forcibly removed under threat of weapons and after their homes in Ogden Point, Rock Bay and Cadboro Bay had been burnt down by British police. Most but not all the Haidas refugees died in the Bones Bay quarantine site but all were supplied wth water, food, shelter and comforts by the Naamgiis.
