Dora Nelson (1939 Film)
''Dora Nelson'' is a 1939 Italian comedy film directed by Mario Soldati and starring Assia Noris, Carlo Ninchi and Luigi Cimara. It is a remake of the 1935 French film of the same title, which was based on a play by Louis Verneuil. The film was shot at Cinecittà in Rome, with several real employees of the studio appearing as themselves.Gundle p.63 It belongs to the movies of the calligrafismo style. Synopsis A headstrong diva abandons the set of her latest film, and heads of to Cannes. A working class girl who strongly resembles the star takes her place so that the film can be finished. Mario Soldati
Mario Soldati (17 November 1906 – 19 June 1999) was an Italian writer and film director. In 1954 he won the Strega Prize for ''Lettere da Capri.'' He directed several works adapted from novels, and worked with leading Italian actresses, such as Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida. Biography A native of Turin, Soldati attended the ''Liceo Sociale'', a Jesuit school, and finished secondary school at age 17. He then studied humanities at the University of Turin. At that time, the University was a hotbed of intellectual activity and the young Soldati would meet and befriend the likes of activist and writer Carlo Levi and journalist Giacomo Debenedetti, who were his seniors. He later studied History of Art at the University of Rome. He started publishing novels in 1929. He achieved the widest notice with ''America primo amore'', published in 1935, a memoir of the time he spent teaching at Columbia University. Massimo Girotti
Massimo Girotti (18 May 1918 – 5 January 2003) was an Italian film actor whose career spanned seven decades. Born in Mogliano, in the province of Macerata, Girotti developed his athletic physique by swimming and playing polo. While studying engineering, he attracted the attention of Mario Soldati, who offered him a small part in the film '' Dora Nelson'' (1939), but it was not until later, in Alessandro Blasetti's '' La corona di ferro'' (''The Iron Crown'') (1941) and Roberto Rossellini's '' Un Pilota ritorna'' (''A Pilot Returns'') (1942), that he began to make an impression as a serious actor. Olinto Cristina (5 February 1888 – 17 June 1962) was an Italian actor and voice actor. Biography Born in Florence to actors Raffaello Cristina and Cesira Sabatini, Cristina began acting on stage as a child. His sisters Ines Cristina Zacconi, Jone Frigerio and Ada Cristina Almirante were also actresses.
