The most notable winner of the race is 2001 winner Ethereal, who went on to win that year's Melbourne Cup. Doomben Racecourse
Doomben Racecourse is a horse racing venue in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located in the suburb of Ascot, 7 kilometres north of the Brisbane central business district. The Doomben course neighbours another thoroughbred venue called the Eagle Farm Racecourse and can be accessed via car, train or bus. Together with Eagle Farm, these courses are considered the two major racecourses in South East Queensland, and can be seen sharing irrigation systems and some of Brisbane Racings feature events. This racecourse underwent its last major reconstruction in 1996 which primarily included major changes to the racing turf and its surrounding structures. Eagle Farm Racecourse
Eagle Farm Racecourse is a heritage-listed horse racing venue in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located at the northern end of Racecourse Road in the suburb of Ascot, from the Brisbane central business district. The turf track is wide, with a circumference of and a home straight of . Darren Beadman
Darren Beadman (born 17 November 1965) is an Australian champion jockey. In 2007 at age 41 he was the youngest jockey ever to be inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, being the first to do so while still active in the industry. Early career Beadman first gained notice while winning the Sydney apprentice jockeys' title in his first season of 1982–83, managing to finish second in 1983-84 and winning again in 1984–85. Beadman piloted Inspired to the winning post in 1984 in taking Australia's premier two-year-old event, the Golden Slipper Stakes, for his first Group 1 win. He repeated that feat on Guineas in 1997. While still a teenager he rode in France for John Fellows winning the 1985 Prix Morny on Regal State. Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. Ethereal (foaled 16 November 1997) is a New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse. The mare is best known for winning the 2001 Melbourne Cup. Background Ethereal is a bay mare owned and bred by brothers Peter and Phillip Vela, who own Pencarrow Stud and New Zealand Bloodstock. Ethereal was sired by the 1989 U.S. Champion 2-Yr-Old Colt and Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner, Rhythm (USA). Her grandsire was the very influential Champion sire Mr. Prospector. Brisbane Racing Club
The Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) is an Australian horse racing organization based in Brisbane in the state of Queensland. The head office of the club is located at 230 Lancaster Road in Ascot. History The Brisbane Racing Club was founded on 1 July 2009 by a merger of the Queensland Turf Club and the Brisbane Turf Club (BTC). The club conducted 98 race meetings in 2012. The consolidation of the race clubs was the first of its kind in Australia as later other metropolitan race clubs would follow their initiative.
