The Doomben Cup is a Brisbane Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older, run under Weight for Age conditions over a distance of 2000 metres at Doomben Racecourse, Brisbane, Australia during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. Total prize money is A$1,000,000. History The race was first held in 1933 as a principal race won by Pentheus in a time of 2.05.7 over the 10 furlongs. Among the outstanding stayers to win the Doomben Cup in its early years include Bernborough in 1946. The New Zealand bred Rough Habit won the race three times from 1991–1993. The only dual winners are Earlwood (1959–1960), Scenic Shot (2009 and 2011) and Huetor (2022–2023). Bernborough (1939–1960) was an outstanding Australian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who competed from 1941 to 1946. He carried heavy weights in 15 consecutive wins that included the Doomben 10,000 while carrying 10 stone 5 pounds. Bernborough was foaled at Rosalie Plains near the township of Oakey in the Darling Downs in Queensland. The bay (color), bay colt (horseracing), colt was by the good sire Emborough (GB) from Bern Maid by Bernard (GB), who was the paternal grandson of Gainsborough (horse), Gainsborough, winner of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, English Triple Crown in 1918. Bore Head
Bore Head was one of Queensland's best staying Thoroughbred racehorses with wins in five cups, the Ipswich, Queensland, Caulfield, Australian and Doomben. He was a bay colt foaled in 1959 by Double Bore (GB), his dam, Mauna Kea was by Brimstone (GB). Bore Head's half-brother Hillside, by Todman, was another useful galloper. Brother and sister Robert Chaplain and Carmel Burke owned Hillside and Bore Head, trained by D. Judd and Ron Dillon. Might And Power
Might and Power (6 October 1993 – 11 April 2020) was a New Zealand bred, Australian owned and trained Thoroughbred racehorse who was named Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year, Australian Horse of the Year in 1998 and 1999. As a four-year-old, Might And Power won the Caulfield Cup, Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, and returned at five to become only the second horse in the history of Australian racing to win both Cups and the Cox Plate. He also won a number of other weight-for-age races in this period, including the Mercedes Classic, the AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the Doomben Cup. Zaaki (foaled 15 February 2015) is a British-bred and Australian-trained thoroughbred racehorse that has won multiple Group One races. Background Ahmad Alotaibi bought Zaaki for 40,000 Guineas at the 2016 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale out of the Staffordstown draft. Racing career Originally trained by Mohamed Moubarak, Zaaki went winless from 4 starts in the 2017 season. In 2018 he was transferred to the stables of Sir Michael Stoute and was successful at his first start for his new trainer on the 21st of April at Thirsk. In 2019 he won the Strensall Stakes at York, the Diomed Stakes at Epsom and the Paradise Stakes at Ascot. Zaaki was sold at the 2020 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale for 150,000 Guineas. Thomas John Smith (3 September 1916 – 2 September 1998) was a leading trainer of thoroughbred racehorses based in Sydney, New South Wales. Inducted into the Australian Racing Museum & Hall of Fame in 2001 and elevated to Legend status in 2012, Smith dominated Sydney racing for over three decades, winning the Sydney Trainers' Premiership every year between 1953 and 1985. Jim Cassidy (born 21 January 1963), often referred to as "Jimmy" is a retired New Zealand jockey who has been inducted in both the Australian Racing Hall of Fame and the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. Rough Habit (2 December 1986 – 7 November 2014) was a New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who won 11 Group One (G1) races on both sides of the Tasman, and won New Zealand's Horse of the Year Award in 1992 and 1995.
