Donut Hole Trail
The Donut Hole Trail is a hiking trail in north-central Pennsylvania, through Sproul State Forest and roughly parallel to the West Branch Susquehanna River. Most of the trail is in Clinton County, with a short segment at its western end in Cameron County. The Donut Hole Trail is regarded as one of the most challenging and remote backpacking trails in Pennsylvania, encountering just six paved roads along its entire length and featuring many difficult climbs and creek crossings. History Construction of the Donut Hole Trail began in the mid-1970s, and the trail was intended as a long-distance backpacking route through the more remote areas of Sproul State Forest. Hyner Run State Park
Hyner Run State Park is a Pennsylvania state park in Chapman Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park is east of Renovo and 3 miles (5 km) north of Hyner on Pennsylvania Route 120 (Route 120 here is also known as Bucktail State Park Natural Area). Hyner Run State Park is surrounded by Sproul State Forest. History Hyner Run State Park was the site of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp (Camp S-75-PA). The CCC provided work for the unemployed young men of the Great Depression. Camp S-75-PA was one of many such camps spread throughout Pennsylvania. The young men of CCC Company 310 worked to clear the regrowing forests of brush to prevent forest fires. They also constructed roads throughout the forests, built state park facilities, constructed bridges on the state roads, planted trees for reforestation, and cleaned streams. Cooks Run, Pennsylvania
Cooks Run is an unincorporated community within Noyes Township in Clinton County, Pennsylvania, United States. Cooks Run was first settled around the time of the American Revolution or shortly after and was known for many years as McGinley's Bottom. At that time, Cooks Run was Pine Creek township, Northumberland county. On November 3, 1888, a disaster occurred at the Kettle Creek Mine at Cooks Run, killing 17 people. The explosion was caused by a drill post falling on a supply of dynamite and caps that had just been brought into the mine. The explosion was propagated by coal dust throughout most of the mine and up the airshaft. Civilian Conservation Corps
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a voluntary government work relief program that ran from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men ages 18–25 and eventually expanded to ages 17–28. The CCC was a major part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal that supplied manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands owned by federal, state, and local governments. The CCC was designed to supply jobs for young men and to relieve families who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression in the United States Robert Fechner was the first director of this agency, succeeded by James McEntee following Fechner's death. Hyner View State Park
Hyner View State Park is a Pennsylvania state park in Chapman Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park is east of Renovo and north of Hyner on Pennsylvania Route 120 (Route 120 here is also known as Bucktail State Park Natural Area). Hyner View State Park is surrounded by Sproul State Forest. Hyner View State Park is from Hyner Run State Park and is administered from there. The lookout area is bordered by a large stone wall that was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. The current access road from Hyner Run State park was built in 1949 (it also connects to a dirt road that leads to Pennsylvania Route 44). When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons.
