Donovan Browning
Donovan Albert Browning (9 May 1916 – 1997) was an English professional footballer who played at right-back in the Football League for Southampton in the 1930s. Football career Browning was born into a farming family at Ashley, near New Milton and represented New Forest Schools before joining New Milton of the Hampshire League in 1934. In May 1935, Browning moved across the New Forest to join Southampton of the Football League Second Division. He spent his first year at The Dell in the reserves and his first-team debut came on 28 December 1936, when he replaced Charlie Sillett at right-back, with Sillett moving to the left in the absence of Arthur Roberts for the match against Coventry City, which ended in a 1–1 draw. Although Browning lost his place for the next match, he was recalled in February and played most of the remaining matches until the end of the season. Ashley, New Forest
Ashley is a village located in the southwest of Hampshire, England. It lies on the eastern outskirts of New Milton in the New Forest district, and is two miles (3 km) inland from the sea. Its history dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086, when two estates were recorded. In the 15th century much of Ashley merged with a neighbouring manor, and the estate became known as Ashley Arnewood. As a village, Ashley began to develop in the 19th century when a church and a school were built. Most of the current village was built in the 20th century, and today Ashley is effectively a suburb of New Milton. History Prehistory Humans have lived in the Ashley area for thousands of years. The County Ground in Southampton, England, was a cricket and football ground. It was the home of Hampshire County Cricket Club from the 1885 English cricket season until the 2000 English cricket season. The ground also served as the home ground for Southampton Football Club from 1896 to 1898. Background Early Hampshire cricket teams had played first-class cricket in Southampton since 1842 at the Antelope Ground, under the supervision of Daniel Day.
