Doniphan is an unincorporated community in Doniphan County, Kansas, United States. History The company that founded the community was organized on November 11, 1854. Doniphan was incorporated in 1869. The community was named, as was the county, for Alexander William Doniphan, a military leader in the Mexican–American War The Mexican–American War (Spanish language, Spanish: ''guerra de Estados Unidos-México, guerra mexicano-estadounidense''), also known in the United States as the Mexican War, and in Mexico as the United States intervention in Mexico, .... A post office was opened in Doniphan on March 3, 1855, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on August 15, 1943. Alexander William Doniphan
Alexander William Doniphan (July 9, 1808 – August 8, 1887) was a 19th-century American attorney, soldier and politician from Missouri who is best known today as the man who prevented the summary execution of Joseph Smith, founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, at the close of the 1838 Mormon War in that state. He also achieved renown as a leader of American troops during the Mexican–American War, as the author of a legal code that still forms the basis of New Mexico's Bill of Rights, and as a successful defense attorney in the Missouri towns of Liberty, Richmond and Independence.
