Don McKenzie (Canadian Football)
Donald William "Shanty" McKenzie, Sr. (c. 1920 – May 2001) was a Canadian football player who played for the Toronto Argonauts. He won the Grey Cup with them in 1950 and 1952. He attended Western Technical-Commercial School in Toronto's west end. He was a veteran of World War II. The 38th Grey Cup, played at Varsity Stadium in Toronto on November 25, 1950, before 27,101 fans, also known as the Mud Bowl, was the Canadian football championship game played between the Toronto Argonauts and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Argonauts won the game 13–0. Conditions on the field On the day before the game, a rare, heavy late November snowfall blanketed the field. Heavy equipment was dispatched to clear the snowfall before the game. However, the equipment damaged the turf, which was already in bad shape from poor groundskeeping during the regular season. To make matters worse, on the morning of the game the weather turned much warmer, and the snowfall turned to steady rain. By game time, the field was torn up and soaked with water, with the rain continuing through the entire game. Both teams had difficulty moving the ball in the conditions. Western Technical-Commercial School
Western Technical-Commercial School is a high school in the High Park North neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada administered by the Toronto District School Board. It shares the same building with Ursula Franklin Academy and The Student School. The school was founded in 1927 and was part of the Toronto Board of Education until 1998. Originally two schools when it was opened, Western Branch Technical School and Western High School of Commerce, the present school is now the product of the merger of the two. Maple Leaf Gardens is a historic building located at the northwest corner of Carlton Street and Church and Wellesley, Church Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
