Dominique Lefèbvre
Dominique Lefèbvre (1810–1865) was a French missionary of the Paris Foreign Missions Society to Vietnam and the bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Western Cochin and of the titular see Isauropolis, '' in partibus infidelium'', during the 19th century. His two terms of imprisonment during the reign of Emperor Thiệu Trị were a pretext for the first French naval interventions in the country. Having been ordained in December 1834, Fr. Dominique Lefèbvre arrived in Đại Nam in 1835. In 1839, Fr. Lefèbvre was appointed the Coadjutor Apostolic Vicar of Cochin and Titular Bishop of Isauropolis. He was consecrated on 1 August 1841 by Bishop Étienne-Théodore Cuenot of the Apostolic Vicariate of Cochin. Paris Foreign Missions Society
The Society of Foreign Missions of Paris (, , MEP) is a Catholic Missionary order, missionary organization. It is not a religious institute, but an organization of secular clergy, secular priests and Laity, lay persons dedicated to missionary work in foreign lands. The Society of Foreign Missions of Paris was established 1658–63. In 1659, instructions for establishment of the Paris Foreign Missions Society were given by Rome's Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. This marked the creation of a missionary institution that, for the first time, did not depend on the control of the traditional missionary and colonialism, colonial powers of Spain or Portugal. Da Nang Bay
Da Nang Bay (), formerly known as Tourane Bay, is a bay of the South China Sea along the coast of Da Nang, Vietnam. The bay is entered between the Sơn Trà Peninsula and the Hải Vân Mountain, 4 miles Northwest. The bay has an area of , a coastline of and adequate depths of . It offers good shelter at all seasons for vessels of any size. The bottom of the bay is mostly sandy, while some areas have corals and rocks. France–Vietnam relations ( French: ''Relations franco-vietnamiennes''; Vietnamese: ''quan hệ Pháp-Việt'') are the diplomatic and historical relations between the French Republic and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, relations started as early as the 17th century with the mission of the Jesuit father Alexandre de Rhodes. Various traders would visit Vietnam during the 18th century, until the major involvement of French forces under Pierre Pigneau de Béhaine from 1787 to 1789 helped establish the Nguyễn dynasty. France was heavily involved in Vietnam in the 19th century under the pretext of protecting the work of Catholic missionaries in the country. Tự Đức's Catholic Persecution
From 1849 to 1862, during the early years of the Vietnamese emperor Tự Đức (r. 1848–1883) of Nguyễn dynasty, Vietnam, the most intense, brutal and bloodiest Anti-Christian sentiment, anti-Christian persecution ever in history happened in Vietnam, also was the last state-sponsored persecution of Catholic Christians in Vietnam, as a part of Tự Đức's efforts to eradicate every trace of Vietnamese Christianity.
