Dole Manor
Dole Manor (; ) is a manor house on Dole Island in the Daugava River, in the Salaspils Parish of Salaspils Municipality in the Vidzeme region of Latvia, not far from Riga. History The first owner of the estate was Swedish army Colonel Nikolauss Deetrih Sperreuter in 1631. The current manor was built in 1898 in Neo-Romantic style. After 1921 it housed a primary school, after 1954 a fishermen's club. Since 1977 the Daugava River Museum has been located in the manor house. Historicism
Historicism is an approach to explaining the existence of phenomena, especially social and cultural practices (including ideas and beliefs), by studying the process or history by which they came about. Doles Sala
Doles Sala is a peninsula in the Daugava River, near the borders of Riga. There is an old mansion on Doles Sala, which now serves as the Daugava Museum. History There is a theory that German knights settled in Doles Sala even before the city of Riga was founded, but this is unproven. There once was a great-oak on Doles Sala. It was the third biggest oak in Latvia. Doles Sala was previously an island, and also larger, until construction of Riga HES flooded it. Some sources list it as the second largest island in Latvia, with an area of 1044 ha. However, Riga HES made Doles Sala into a peninsula. President of Latvia Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga planted a linden tree on Doles Sala in 2004 on the day when Latvia became European Union member state. Daugava River
The Daugava ( ), also known as the Western Dvina or the Väina River, is a large river rising in the Valdai Hills of Russia that flows through Belarus and Latvia into the Gulf of Riga of the Baltic Sea. The Daugava rises close to the source of the Volga. It is in length, of which are in Latvia and in Russia. It is a westward-flowing river, tracing out a great south-bending curve as it passes through northern Belarus. The city of Ķekava is located 6 miles south of the west bank of the river. Latvia's capital, Riga, bridges the river's estuary four times. Built on both riverbanks, the city centre is from the river's mouth and is a significant port. Vidzeme (; Old Latvian orthography: ''Widda-semme'', ) is one of the Historical Latvian Lands. The capital of Latvia, Riga, is situated in the southwestern part of the region.
