Doctor Who Restoration Team
The ''Doctor Who'' Restoration Team is a loose collection of ''Doctor Who'' fans, many within the television industry, who restore ''Doctor Who'' episodes for release on a variety of formats. It was formed in 1992 by a group of fans who asked for and received funding from the BBC to perform colour restorations on a series of Jon Pertwee Doctor Who episodes. The group has worked with BBC Television and BBC Worldwide and has restored many of the final ''Doctor Who'' VHS releases and all of the "classic series" DVD and Blu-Ray releases to date. ''Doctor Who'' is a British science fiction television series broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The series, created by Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber and Donald Wilson (writer and producer), Donald Wilson, depicts the adventures of an extraterrestrial being called the Doctor, part of a humanoid species called Time Lords. The Doctor travels in the universe and in time using a time travelling Spacecraft, spaceship called the TARDIS, which externally appears as a British police box. This is a list of ''Doctor Who'' serials and episodes that have been released on DVD and Blu-ray. DVD Release Most ''Doctor Who'' DVDs have been released first in the United Kingdom with Region 2, and released later in Australia and New Zealand ( Region 4) and in North America ( Region 1). Aside from differences in the external packaging, special features and commentaries are mostly identical in all versions. All Region 1 releases prior to September 2005 included a "Who's Who" feature that identified key cast members and gave brief biographies and filmographies. The Region 1 releases of ''The Robots of Death'', ''The Ark in Space'', ''The Talons of Weng-Chiang'', and ''Pyramids of Mars'' also include a featurette with the syndicated Time Life introductions and closings narrated by Howard da Silva. Doctor Who Missing Episodes
Several portions of the long-running British science fiction on television, science-fiction television programme ''Doctor Who'' are no longer held by the BBC. Between 1967 and 1978, the BBC routinely Lost television broadcast#Wiping, deleted archive programmes for various practical reasons—lack of space, scarcity of materials, and a lack of rebroadcast rights. As a result, 97 of 253 episodes from the programme's first six years are currently missing, primarily from Doctor Who (season 3), seasons 3, Doctor Who (season 4), 4 and Doctor Who (season 5), 5, leaving 26 Serial (radio and television), serials incomplete. Many more were considered lost until recovered from various sources, mostly overseas broadcasters. ''Doctor Who'' is not unique in its losses, as many broadcasters routinely cleared their archives in this manner.
