Dmitry Shevchenko (discus Thrower)
Dmitriy Igorievich Shevchenko (russian: Дмитрий Игоревич Шевченко; born May 13, 1968, in Taganrog) is a Russian discus thrower who won silver medals at the World and European Championships. Despite this he did not throw past the 70 metres mark until 2002, when he achieved his personal best throw of 70.54 metres in Krasnodar. His three participations in the Olympics were all fruitless, especially the 2004 edition where he exited without any valid throws. He is a six-time national champion in the discus event. He missed the 1996 and 1997 seasons, due to a doping suspension. Taganrog
Taganrog ( rus, Таганрог, p=təɡɐnˈrok) is a port city in Rostov Oblast, Russia, on the north shore of the Taganrog Bay in the Sea of Azov, several kilometers west of the mouth of the Don River. 1995 World Championships In Athletics
The 5th World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, were held at the Ullevi Stadium, Gothenburg, Sweden on 5–13 August 1995. This edition featured 1804 athletes from 191 nations. This competition saw the women run the 5000 m event at the World Championships for the first time. The race replaced the 3000 m event which had been run at all previous World Championships. Athletics At The 2000 Summer Olympics – Men's Discus Throw
The men's discus throw event at the 2000 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program was held at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday, 24 September and Monday, 25 September. Forty-five athletes from 28 nations competed. The event was won by Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania, the nation's second victory in the men's discus throw. Lars Riedel of Germany took silver, becoming the 13th man to win multiple discus throw medals. Frantz Kruger earned South Africa's first medal in the event with his bronze. The qualifying athletes progressed through to the final where the qualifying distances are scrapped and they start afresh with up to six throws. The qualifying distance was 64.00 metres. For all qualifiers who did not achieve the standard, the remaining spaces in the final were filled by the longest throws until a total of 12 qualifiers.
